World's biggest mine: Inside US coal

Barack Obama’s pledge to cut carbon emissions has not stopped North Antelope Rochelle mine in Wyoming. In fact, production is booming – and climate change is off the agenda. The Guardian’s Suzanne Goldenberg gets a rare look inside the biggest coal mine in the world.

How do you calculate CO2 emissions from coal?
Carbon dioxide emissions per ton of coal were determined by multiplying heat content times the carbon coefficient times the fraction oxidized times the ratio of the molecular weight of carbon dioxide to that of carbon (44/12).

  6. Mike Ulm on June 13, 2022 at 2:46 pm

Climate change has been happening b4 man. Our carbon footprint should be limited to a minimum but let’s focus on places like India Pakistan Russia China and those who don’t filter and manage their carbon. No we attack our own people who are already following EPA laws.

Climate change is going to happen regardless of coal mines.
The sun is getting bigger and hotter so the earth will eventually turn into a hot charcoal.
Wanna save nature? Uhmmm don’t have kids. Humans create pollution to the planet but like I said, humans or no humans, earth is not going to last forever.
Look at China, they pollute and populate more than any other country in the world, but not a single word is said 😶

  9. Brad Loewen on June 13, 2022 at 2:55 pm

Our coal consumption has little to no effect on climate change. Developing countries are the real main sources of pollution

Emissions from coal is a fraction in comparison to a volcano. But to get a better understanding of how it affects us is to imagine a camp fire that you are concerned about the smoke. Wind can and will change. You have to make considerations. But coal is probably making the electricity to power your computer.

Why do they have Sachs commenting? He’s an economist not a climate expert…Maybe one of the most pretentious 5 min video clips I have even watched. Pure "elites" looking down on normal people for making a living and providing a product the world demands.

Climate change has been so solidly proven scientifically, that they had to remove signs from Glaciers they “proved” would melt, but never did. They have no clue what they’re talking about, so let’s get on already.

It’s a complex issue to solve, on the one hand, global warming is happening, its established science, on the other, coal is the cheapest source of fuel, how do we replace it? with what that is economic? solar is promising but seems far off still

  29. Red Richard on June 13, 2022 at 3:15 pm

Trying to be eco-friendly myself… This is just misleading, when I seek info about emission I get it, but I came here to see operation of a biggest coal mine… And there’s none of it :v

  33. Ryan 8191 on June 13, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Was it humanity that caused the thousands upon thousands of climate change events over the last several billion years

  34. Wade Saxton on June 13, 2022 at 3:21 pm

If the Climate Change claims that have been made were/are correct…. Then it’s too late. A “carbon budget” is a an arbitrary & abstract concept created as a mechanism to control energy.
The people that hate coal, oil & gas will never win the argument until they can present another viable option. So far the only way they can make their alternatives viable is to increase the costs of carbon fuels to ridiculous levels that make the “eco” energies cost competitive. However that increase in costs has a domino effect that shuts down society.

They’ll never admit it, but coal is actually one of the cleanest sources of energy available. Also, far too valuable and useful to ever get rid of.
