Where can I enjoy God’s land and detect in Nevada without having to ask anyone for permission?
Same for NM and Utah, how do I find out which lands I can detect on freely and which are private or don’t allow it at all?

If a Wells Fargo stage coach in the 1800’s was robbed and the gold was buried on Indian reservation land, can the US government or Wells Fargo dig it up and claim it or does it belong to the Indian nation? Or, what if a citizen from Canada or other country, traveled to the US and buried his/her gold on Indian reservation land, can they go back and claim it or does it belong to the Indian reservation?

I am in northern New Mexico and I prospect every summer. I have property near Hopewell lake that has gold. Gold can be found in Red River and many other places in Taos County. Never found anything bigger than a pea sized nugget so prepare your sluice or panning for flour gold.

I agree, add something about the northern part of the state, that’s were most of the people live and lots of free gold up north.

    Hi
Can I legally prospect for gold on property within the Navajo Nation? The area I want to prospect in is about 100-miles N/W of Albuquerque, NM which seems to be in the Navajo Nation. Do I need to get permission or other approvals before I go on that land?

"Black Range Tales" is a book on the subject. Reaching back in my memory I think the author is Jim Beckwith, or some such similar name.

Oro Grande south of Alamogordo on Highway 54 was named after gold being found there. People still pull gold out of there.

I like claim jumpers now. Especially ignorant ones that think the gold is in the overburden. Makes life easier.

  21. Lucky Baldwin on February 6, 2023 at 11:29 am

Going onto someone else’s claim to mine or prospect is called "trespassing." "Claim jumping" or "overfiling," is when you file a claim over the top of a valid claim and then have a court find the original claim invalid. That forces the claim owner to file a new claim, but since the overfiled claim has an older date, it is now the new valid claim. So trespassing is stealing gold from a claim and claim jumping is stealing the claim itself.
