On this channel we go deep… REALLY deep into abandoned tunnels and mines all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hike back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Some of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower. We discuss why the miners chose these sites and we try to point out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men loose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
Dangers? Oh yes, there are allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders and snakes all find there home in abandoned mines, shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooding and collapsing rock!
We take abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly” and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob”, “Quackers” and “Bobbie” are sure to brighten your day with there comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.

I can’t imagine the fit BLM would have if they drove up on you coming out of a mine like this one. I’ve had them park crossways in the road to force a confrontation, then all red faced and yelling at me when I was travelling on a designated road, doing nothing wrong. Not that I consider what you do to be doing anything ‘wrong’, but to cross the royal BLM gate would certainly get the self proclaimed public land ‘owners’ animated.
A Drift are formed from falling snow carried in suspension by wind or from snow eroded from the ground surface, both effects occurring at wind velocities in excess of about 8 mph. The amount of snow carried by the wind is thus dependent on snowfall, on wind velocity, and on the sweep of snowcover upwind. not a tunnel or cave.
A gas powered Stihl concrete saw with a diamond blade would make short work of those bars

I was in that town when i worked in Tonopah, A very cool place…
I had a friend drop by and he watched this explore with me and he brought up that you sound like the guy that does those TV shows Marty Stouffer’s wild America.

@19:47 you will see my name on the miners’ graffiti, actually my uncle Dave. My dad said Dave worked at the Tonapah when their father died in 56 and quit after somebody died falling down the main shaft. Miners were a superstitious lot

Don’t know about the States, but here in the Netherlands a gate like that tells you the tunnel you’re in front of is a protected bat roost.

So, back in 2005, I had bought a place there in Tonopah. Bought a quad and went exploring there at the mine shafts, before the yellow pillars had been put up and that metal grate hadn’t been installed and you could walk as far back as you wanted to. However, just beyond that metal grate to the right, there is a deep wide shaft that goes down I would assume several hundred feet. It’s really dark in there and I didn’t have a flashlight with me so I had to park the quad at the entrance of the shaft and was only able to walk in about 25 feet before there was no more light and was completely dark. You used to be able to drive right up to the opening of the shaft before the yellow poles were placed. At night you could park your vehicle facing into the shaft, turn your bright lights on into the shaft for a bit, turn them off and a butt load of bats would come flying out light crazy… LoL. Happy exploring… Oh yeah, Rumor has it there is an old small Toyota or Nissan truck at the bottom of that shaft to the right I mentioned. Don’t know if true or just urban legend… anyways…
