What's Behind the Scary Gate at the Tonopah-Belmont Mine?

What's Behind the Scary Gate at the Tonopah-Belmont Mine?

Steel vehicle barriers, a concrete filled gate and bars that look like something you’d find around Count Dracula’s Castle. Why did the authorities go to such great lengths to keep people out of this mine? We go behind the gate to try and figure out why.

Welcome, and thank you for stopping by our channel!
Shot almost entirely in 4K! …so turn up those video settings!

On this channel we go deep… REALLY deep into abandoned tunnels and mines all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hike back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Some of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver and other minerals.

A&FP moves just a bit slower. We discuss why the miners chose these sites and we try to point out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men loose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.

Dangers? Oh yes, there are allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders and snakes all find there home in abandoned mines, shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooding and collapsing rock!

We take abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly” and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob”, “Quackers” and “Bobbie” are sure to brighten your day with there comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.

Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST.(that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!

P.S. Please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE! Your support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob thanks you!

Ok, now for the ugly stuff…

🤔 So, BLM put up barriers protecting passersby from being injured in mines? I didn’t know that Black Lives Matter was involved in mine safety! 😁

  2. D Gad on December 16, 2022 at 8:43 am

Idk how I ever missed this collaboration!! This is amazing thank you so much we definitely need more of these!!

  3. Robert Lyman on December 16, 2022 at 8:45 am

Seen some videos of those beams being dry rotted, look new and fresh, but crumble like a rice cake

  4. Ben Grzybowski on December 16, 2022 at 8:45 am

How do you get your massive balls into these mines? I imagine that must be difficult.

  5. Erik (Chief) Bodeau on December 16, 2022 at 8:47 am

Seizure.. ?? "olfactory hallucinations" .. Be safe brother. Check with your Doc

  6. Dale Wilson on December 16, 2022 at 8:49 am

Rappeling on a rope, rapid descent can damage the rope with heat.

  9. Helena Smith on December 16, 2022 at 8:55 am

can see why they closed off too deep for most

  10. kelly miles on December 16, 2022 at 8:56 am

There is nothing behind those gates. That mine was stripped top to bottom by the company left. Explored numerous times. Not worth the effort of even driving there.

  11. Remco van Vliet on December 16, 2022 at 8:57 am

Don’t know about the States, but here in the Netherlands a gate like that tells you the tunnel you’re in front of is a protected bat roost.

Prohibited from entering unless you are a sanctioned, certified zoologist doing field research, WITH a permit!

Takes me a while to catch up with Frank’s fast talk..

Frank could you bring more rope and explore the lower apartment at the bottom of those big holes

  17. Joe on December 16, 2022 at 9:05 am

So, back in 2005, I had bought a place there in Tonopah. Bought a quad and went exploring there at the mine shafts, before the yellow pillars had been put up and that metal grate hadn’t been installed and you could walk as far back as you wanted to. However, just beyond that metal grate to the right, there is a deep wide shaft that goes down I would assume several hundred feet. It’s really dark in there and I didn’t have a flashlight with me so I had to park the quad at the entrance of the shaft and was only able to walk in about 25 feet before there was no more light and was completely dark. You used to be able to drive right up to the opening of the shaft before the yellow poles were placed. At night you could park your vehicle facing into the shaft, turn your bright lights on into the shaft for a bit, turn them off and a butt load of bats would come flying out light crazy… LoL. Happy exploring… Oh yeah, Rumor has it there is an old small Toyota or Nissan truck at the bottom of that shaft to the right I mentioned. Don’t know if true or just urban legend… anyways…

  18. David Welsh on December 16, 2022 at 9:05 am

    I will try again
@19:47 you will see my name on the miners’ graffiti, actually my uncle Dave. My dad said Dave worked at the Tonapah when their father died in 56 and quit after somebody died falling down the main shaft. Miners were a superstitious lot

  19. Freedomquest08 on December 16, 2022 at 9:09 am

I can’t imagine the fit BLM would have if they drove up on you coming out of a mine like this one. I’ve had them park crossways in the road to force a confrontation, then all red faced and yelling at me when I was travelling on a designated road, doing nothing wrong. Not that I consider what you do to be doing anything ‘wrong’, but to cross the royal BLM gate would certainly get the self proclaimed public land ‘owners’ animated.

  20. Nicholas Glass on December 16, 2022 at 9:10 am

  25. Mia maven on December 16, 2022 at 9:16 am

16:00 I pretty sure this mine had a fire that took the lives of 17 men around the early 1900s.

  29. Dale Wilson on December 16, 2022 at 9:19 am

Bleach smell, meth lab, certain flowering trees like Japanese Chestnut, some pears.

  35. Lorral Weaver on December 16, 2022 at 9:25 am

If this is supposed to be a family channel; then why does Frank curse?

  36. CoasterCrazy on December 16, 2022 at 9:27 am

I like how hardcore they went blocking off the front entrance! The concrete on the floor so you cant go underneath was an awesome touch too!!

  37. Bill Kennedy on December 16, 2022 at 9:28 am

A Drift are formed from falling snow carried in suspension by wind or from snow eroded from the ground surface, both effects occurring at wind velocities in excess of about 8 mph. The amount of snow carried by the wind is thus dependent on snowfall, on wind velocity, and on the sweep of snowcover upwind. not a tunnel or cave.

  38. Aaron vickers on December 16, 2022 at 9:28 am

Correct me im wrong. The tennis ball is to reduce vibration?

  39. John Russell on December 16, 2022 at 9:30 am

I love the intros explaining the general layout and system. Makes it a little easier to understand some of these crazy swiss cheesed hills and mountains.

  40. dalmatiangirl61 on December 16, 2022 at 9:31 am

A gas powered Stihl concrete saw with a diamond blade would make short work of those bars

  41. Jessica House on December 16, 2022 at 9:32 am

The bars covering the front of the main entrance have since been cut through. Hopefully no one gets stupid and gets hurt! Great video!

  42. B-Rad Umuck on December 16, 2022 at 9:32 am

    You two together … I don’t know? I’m scared…

  45. Minimus Max on December 16, 2022 at 9:33 am

I wish you’d get rid of your intros. They’re a waste of time. It’s youtube, not TV.

    Porta ban would be useful

  47. R on December 16, 2022 at 9:34 am
