I did some Archeology digging, as a teenager, at a river called the Fords crossing, near Swan River!!!
That shovel from 1944 is WW II surplus easily bought even today. I noticed it was unused the paint looked too new. I have one from WW II and one from Viet Nam also. It appears to be the shovel was planted not too long ago the Case should have writing stamped on it. As to year and possible soldiers SS# Last four.
