VERDE VALLEY ANCIENT SALT MINE, A MUMMY ? BLACK FLAG EXPEDITION

The Verde Salt Mine played a key role in the life of the Verde Valley’s early inhabitants. Formed by sediments from an inland freshwater lake that existed between 10 and 2 million years ago, the Verde Salt Mine deposit has been mined since at least the first century. Both the Hohokam and Sinagua cultures used the salt as a trade item with cultures as far a way as Baja California, New Mexico and Mexico. The the deposit was mined commercially as late as the 1920s and 1930s. The U.S forest service is currently developing the mine as an interpretive site. The Camp Verde Salt Mine is one of the oldest known mines in the United States! Anthropologists have determined that the mine has been worked for nearly 2,000 years! The Spanish first recorded its discovery between 1583 and 1598 AD. The establishment of Fort Verde in 1871 brought attention to the salt deposit.western history is the very heart beat of the southwest , If you love history and are in to the outdoors you have found your tribe , your adventure awaits , Welcome to Black Flag Adventures . It is late Friday evening here and your early release offerings are better than a bedtime story. Thanks for the add.

I live in Camp Verde. You’re right, the soil does feel funny….spongy like. The slightest bit of rain, it turns into clingy mud….never seen anything like it. I’ve been trying to find a way into this area so I will try to locate that entry. I recognize the area, shouldn’t be too hard. Excellent video, thanks for posting!

Very cool. I like that you explore places with ancients as well as more modern man like miners, etc.

Me either, you should talk with Sally Randall, her family has more history in the Verde Valley than anyone else.

What a great place! Thanks for showing. But be careful, arsenic is in salt form out in nature.

Thanks for this. I had no idea they mined salt from liberal tears thousands of years ago. Kidding!! lol
