TREASURE: Upshur County Treasures
TREASURE: Upshur County Treasures
PLEASE SHARE:
PART 1: The Buckhannon River Treasure. In 1863 Lewis County farmer Walter Wilson learned of a legendary “treasure cave” supposedly located somewhere in neighboring Upshur County along the Buckhannon River. He was entrusted with a vaguely written map indicating the cave’s general location. Wilson died shortly after obtaining the map’s “key” and before he could launch a search for the hidden treasure.
Years later his grandson, Joseph Wilson, picked up the search but was unable to locate the map’s key. 20+ years of searching proved futile. in 1894 Wilson turned the map over to local author and historian Virgil McWhorter who later immortalized the tale in his 1915 book The Border Settlers of Southwestern Virginia.
The treasure cave, if it exists, has never been found.
PART 2: The Upshur County Doll House Treasure. In 1889 a man, calling himself Alfonso Marzo, came to southern Upshur County. He supposedly purchased a small tract of land along the Alexander & Rich Mountain Railroad from a local farmer names James Shahan. On this land he built a strange home, describe by those who saw it as a miniaturized version of a contemporary frame home. In essence, a human “Doll House.”
Marzo remains in the valley for about 4 years but kept mostly to himself, showing his face only when absolutely necessary. Around 1893 Marzo disappeared, leaving behind only his oddly sized home and questions. In 1911 James Shahan received a cryptic letter, supposedly addressed to him by Marzo. Marzo related a strange tail of $330,000.00 buried on or near the location of the “Doll House.” By 1911 this house had also disappeared and Marzo was never heard from again. So far as we know the treasure he referenced has never been found.

Alphonso Marzo is giving me Enoch Wallace vibes.
You should do a story on the lost gold of dents run
Gaol is pronounced jail.
In Canada we see that weird spelling sometimes.
Maybe this was like an early version of a Nigerian scam. Send me money and I’ll send you the big money. I say that partly in jest. I like the appreciation that marzo had for the man.
I live in upshur county sure would be nice to find a big cash of gold
I worked for years on the current railroad. I’ve seen went under the hanging rock. Been and worked at Alexander. Worked near Ten Mile, Buckhannon and Tygart Valley. It really is some of the best and most keep secrets of the USA. This video is great. Just like all your others. Keep them coming.
Where is hackers creek does anyone know is it in Upsher county
To be perfectly honest… I can’t imagine somebody discovering a significant cash of silver and gold and then just up and telling everyone about it… I think my first instinct would be to keep it on the down low. Lol.
Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars!!!! Love that you decided to have those in the shot behind you!!! We visited there a few years back, had some weird stuff happen but it’s a beautiful place. This video is definitely one of my favorite that you’ve done so far. Sean, you are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alfonso Marzo translates as Alfonso March (Google Translate)
I live in upshur county so now I have to look ☺️
"Do not seek the traysure!"

@23:10 "gaol" is the British spelling of "jail."
Oscar Wilde "The Ballad of Reading Gaol"
💕
@12:30 *cue Alfred Hitchcock Presents intro music* …..
HAHA THE FIRST NIGERIAN PRINCE SCAM LOVE IT
I always consider that the "treasures" that were said to be buried might have been found. If someone found it, especially at the time when the coins were recognized, who would tell? I would think someone would not want others to know.
I can’t believe I’m just finding this channel, this is amazing content! Please keep up the great work!!
I grew up in French Creek, WV. Love hearing tales from my home.
Upshur county resident here! Wonderful video, love your channel Sean!
I LOVED THIS!!! ENCORE ENCORE!!!!
Sean, you’ve lost weight! Looking great!
Thanks Sean. Wilson. One of our family names. My grandparents. Very common tho. Nice more light-hearted theme this time.🙏😉🍀
Having driven through your State twice this month there is zero doubt of it’s beauty! Thank you for another great video, you do fantastic work and research!
Marzo sounds Basque to me.
So weird, yet interesting to, for the 1st time, become aware of events that happened a century before I was born, just a wee bit south of where I grew up. WV has so much hidden history – ghosts in the rock – revealed ithru folklore, but also in records, artifacts, & familial testimony. So many secrets! I love the old former homesteads almost entirely reclaimed by nature. Strange, remnants of his home should vanish so quickly from the land w/o a trace. There’s usually at least pieces of foundation or chimney stones scattered beneath dirt, brush, & overgrowth; bottle dumps & half-buried trash heaps, as well.
I have been out of touch for awhile. It is so very good to hear your voice and historical stories again. It would be nice to find these.
What no unsolved homicides?
Not sure why but I like the intro music
My family has roots in the area. I really enjoy all stories by Mysterious WV…well done!
I truly enjoy listening to your stories. You remind me of a young Walter Cronkite.
Well done. Now produce more!
I love this channel
I wish you would do Massachusetts and or other states. I love this channel
