I love to dig and always find treasures that the estate organizers miss. I love to hear them say, “where did you find that” !
Has anyone gone thru pockets at an estate sale and found money in the pocket? Do you grab it and stuff it in your pocket? I think I’ll bring a small flashlight also. Sometimes places can be dark in garages. Great video! I did bring a screwdriver and took a hand crank pencil sharpener off the garage shelf at a sale, I think I paid $1.00 for it.
Even before this video I followed Dominic’s advice to move stuff around. I went to the third and final day of a PACKED estate sale to do back to pickup a $100 can opener I mistakenly left the day before and it was still there! Fortunately I had put it down on a shelf and forgot about it and no one noticed it. But that’s not the digging part! I went to a bedroom where there were a few people and just some boxes. I went through the boxes that people had passed by because you had to bend and dig. I found 11 paperback copies of the one-panel comic strip from the 70’s Love Is… Most people will remember as the nude couple and they would have these strips that said Love Is…sharing a donut. Sappy stuff like that! 🙂 I paid no more that $2-3 if even that much and sold for $115. Digging has paid off for me. Thanks Dominic!
good advice. i usually make a b-line to the jewelry looking for watches then go to the basement
Maybe they’re looking for specific things – not picking to resell. Of I go to an estate sale looking for furniture I’m not going to get into closets and cabinets. Know what I mean?
Thank you for so many amazing tips, It is the best feeling when you are digging trough a box of "junk" and find treasures. Usually my husband is done with a estate sale in about 10 minutes and he tells me, "there is nothing here, i’ll wait for you in the car" and then I wont disclose how long it takes me to come out, lol but then I come out with a box of stuff plus my shopping bag full to the rim, and he looks at me like, how and where?? lol sorry long story. I just love his expression. You have so many amazing cool things in your house, I missed Daisy today. 🙂
Nothing was missed at estate sales in SF the first 35 people in line were all dealers. After hr nothing left
This Video was chalked full of great tips!!! I love how you talked about looking in closets for clothing and hats, that’s what I always go to first usually.
I look everywhere and through everything lol
WOOO LOVE LEARNING~!
Great tips Dom! Thanks
Very informative & entertaining. Thank you, Dom!
Great tips!!
I bought my screwdriver and tool kit! Not gonna miss out on any more light switch plates. This experience reminds me of a church marque I saw years ago, it said "To err is Human, To continue is Stupid". Great vid as always!
As an occasional estate sale operator, I don’t wan’t anyone unscrewing something from the wall w/o asking me. Also, if it’s priced, usually it’s going to be a yes. Unpriced, doubtful, but do ask.
File cabinets and desk drawers are my favorite. Most people don’t realize there is good money in old stereo brochures and manuals. And usually they saved a bunch of them and kept them in good shape if they filed them in a drawer or cabinet. And all sorts of other ephemera can hide in those files that most people don’t bother even looking at.
Great video my friend!
I know of someone who hid stuff inside of a rolled up dollar store throw kitchen rug. She kept it in ‘plain sight’ with her mops and brooms in the utility room. She also had a special kleenex box where she hid cash underneath all the tissue. That box was always in the kitchen and people rarely asked for a tissue.
Great video! Thank you!!
So basically look everywhere
Maybe this is slightly off your topic, but how in the world do you hold everything you see that you want? Using your examples, let’s say you were interested in the Limb Cutter from the garage, the Pink Flamingo Planter from the deck, some Framed Prints off the wall, etc, These are pretty large items! Picking them up when you see them (because if you don’t the minute you turn your back someone else has picked them up) and trying to carry them up to the cashier if you can find them in a sea of other people can be a nightmare! Especially if they are very large! To top that off some of the Estate Sales I’ve been too lately will not let you bring in anything larger than a very small purse. Any tips to make this easier?
Great video……..agree 100% with EVERYTHING…..especially pockets 🙂
Also: the viewers want to know. Is/was your wife team Edward or team Jacob?
I how plenty treasures but I don’t know what i how can someone please take a look at it
Great tips & tricks!!! Thanks, man! -Kevin
Hi PT, Very helpful… I always thought we are not supposed to look through drawers and other places that are not open. Going to an Estate Sale Wednesday. Wish me luck 🤞 Thanks for your tips. ✌
YES, check those Closets and definately bathrooms! And you’re right, people dont like to bend or forget to check the bottom underneath tables and shelves.
Thank You Dom, i forgot about pockets.
So glad I am seeing this! I am going to my first estate sale tomorrow, these tips are so useful because I wasn’t sure how it works really until now.
I agree about garage and kitchen cabinets. I found two rare Royal Albert mugs in the kitchen cabinets at one of the estate sales. One of them sold $30 plus shipping within 1 hour of listing and the other one sold for $20 plus shipping within couple days. I flipped $2 to $50.
If there is a four day estate sale, when is the best day to go ? I know usually the last but sometimes by then alot of treasures are gone 🙁
Found a set of 12 slot cars right at the checkout, must have been there for 2 days since I got it for half off at 10$. Sold them for $411.
I use hair elastic or scrunchies on posters or winding up electrical cords as they are made to be gentler and I always have a ton ….in pockets, on the stick shift in the car, in the glove box, everywhere.
Basements and attics are good places to look too.
Medical supplies!!! If they were cared for before passing you’ll see medical supplies. Those are super expensive. As long as it’s not rx you can sell for a boat load and only pay $2 for it.
I hate with corona now they’re limiting the number of people in but limiting your time. So we have less time to look. It’s frustrating
I run to the closets and storage rooms lol. The garages are honestly my favorite
Good tips thanks
Funny, I have that same yellow smiley face plastic glass you had in your cupboard. Use it all the time!
Great video and solid insights, Dom! When the estate doors open and the crowd runs for the low hanging fruit (vinyl records etc), I slink away to the basement, digging through piles and drawers, leaving no stone unturned.
Look in the drawers of sewing machines and sewing boxes, jewelry and generally vintage stuff found in there. I recently found a mint 1940s midol tin in a box of sewing machine attachments, it was cool.
Good reminders to search everywhere, not just glance at the surface.
Absolutely love your videos!! I found a really nice coat in a closet for $5 and sold it for $90 at an estate sale.
These are my FAVORITE videos!! So I do check 9 of the 10 places you talked about, but I never thought of checking POCKETS!! Thanks you!
One place lots of folk don’t care to look in is the bathtub; I found a nice wooden walking cane; a tub organizer and nice towels I kept for myself! 💯💯🎉💥💕🎈😻
Excellent Tips!!!
Great tips and I never would have thought to look in pockets. My husband son and I are huge Who fans too!
I once found a rare WWII artillery protractor stuffed into a drawer with about 25 other cheap plastic protractors. It certainly pays to dig through those drawers!
The money/jewelry in a pocket part would have been a good time to talk about ethics.
In SF all the dealers with more money always went to the main rooms for antiques and jewelry. Cool stuff was in the basements but these couple of guys always blocked me so i didnt have a chance so i opted for garage sales
I have found treasures in drawers!! 🙂
Sometimes my beeline is the jewelry section, lots of silver pieces getting sold for a couple bucks, even a rare gold piece, no matter how great they check the jewelry. I saw your garage comment, usually in big houses they just fill boxes with lots of items and leave it in the garage, a few also do this in the basement as well.
