These Pools Help Support Half The People On Earth
What are these electric blue ponds in the middle of the Utah desert? And why do they keep changing color?
Join Derek Muller (Veritasium) as he looks into the weird, bizarre, and seemingly inexplicable images found on Google Earth to discover what on Earth they actually are. It’s a travel vlog, documentary, and science show wrapped into one. It’s Pindrop.

I’m an x truck driver and I knew what it was I have hauled this stuff b4 I did hazmat stuff for years. Not that it’s has mat but it can be if mixed
In the beginning of the video, I was thinking "Saltpetre", when he was asking what they could be used for. Then he was saying potassium, and I was all confused. Didn’t realize saltpetre was a form of potassium.
How many gamma rays from these fields?
All that fertilizer made 8n my backyard. But Ukraine war made food shortages? Okay. Got it.
I remember my science teacher put potassium in a bucket of water as a class experiment and blew himself up he was too close, the only science class I ever learnt something 😁
what was in the balloon
How does the evaporation effect the weather system? Wouldn’t evaporating that much water change the weather?
일렉트릭 블루 연못
Bizarre, sick and disgusting. The Chinese Governments perverted attempt at a environmental drag show.
When I saw how big that chunk of potassium was I knew we were in for a big bang.
But despite how important fertilizer is countries are outlawing it due to the lies regarding "climate change"…
Great Movie…
So pot ash was a thing and then this guy came along and decided he’d try it and so he gets to be famous for it? Shenanigans.
My Son is interested in archaeology and I will share this great inspirational video.
why do the ponds change color sometimes?

We native Americans demand a cut of all revenue made in the USA
7:37 seems like a supernova.
Hold on, where is the point of saying a brands name like getorade but having the lable removed from the bottle
Darek, You should start giving lectures.
You are making every think I found boring, interesting.
Plus your story telling skill is mind blowing 🤯
Where’s Pindrop Episode 2?
Jessi Pinkman in his 40’s.
Derek talking to people at Dead Horse Point overlook who hadn’t yet seen the placard that explains what the ponds are. 😆
Here he states why eating plant based foods is actually the way it should be 17:31
so nice an explaination!! thank you
Here in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, our forests and lakes are mineral deficient due to acid rain. We have a program that collects wood ash from homes and the ash is spread in the forests near water bodies. I spread mine on my lawn and forest areas, which are next to a large lake.
Jeff Harvey.
Harvesting potash by mining doesn’t seem infinite. This is a non-renewable resource.
Potassium sounds like LNG today…
The House of Mysteries in Oregon
That was an awesome video, as usual! But… where’s the rest of the series? haha
Before watching the video or reading any comments:
I think these are like bacteria/ microorganism farms. There’s lots of bacteria and algae that are vibrantly colored. Some of them can create medication, make fertilizer, or balance the contaminants in your fish pond.
So yeah my guess is some type of microorganism farm.
Very interesting
Love all the scientific detail but lets get down to the child like reactions from this man when he does experiments LOL such a great video!
Isn’t Lake Mead drying up?… Any connections to these facilities?…. Hmmmm….
Im wondering how these days of water shortage will impact this process.
Thankfully the Colorada River has an unlimited supply of water to pump into these potash mines.
WOW
I have seen those in person
Im from utah and its so funny to me to watch videos like this
I just subscribed to the University of Veritasium
WOW, I’ve backpacked through Utah on the Hayduke route and saw these ponds from across the Colorado river. Mike Coronella who speaks @11:03 is the co- creator of the Hayduke trail.
There’s some similar looking ponds in Southeast florida, just west of Miami, that I always wondered about and thought this video may be referencing.. but turns out those are just limestone quarries lol
Bananas are actually poor sources of potassium.
Example of gooood marketing
4:29 indoor rain
made from ash
nicely explained. the illustration @14:20 and analogizing water molecules to miners is brilliant
We did literally scramble about the shores for food at one time! Then The Middle East taught us agriculture & a better numerical system & more. Thank you Davy for Potash. Very interesting video indeed!
