CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Inigo (Mandy Patinkin) avenges his father by killing his murderer, Count Rugen (Christopher Guest).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on William Goldman’s novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk’s character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley’s journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley’s death. With help from Prince Humperdinck’s disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.

CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1987)
Cast: Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin
Director: Rob Reiner
Producers: Norman Lear, Rob Reiner, Andrew Scheinman, Jeffrey Stott, Steve Nicolaides
Screenwriter: William Goldman

Undoubtedly one of the best, funniest, poignant and fulfilling scenes in one of the best, cleverest, most satisfying movies, period.

When I was working commercial nuclear security, there were these things called "sound powered telephones", and they were everywhere, just like a Naval warship.

0300 in the morning, I’m on the -68"6′ elevation, on patrol, and bored as all get-out. Spin the dial to an unmarked position, crank the "wake-up" handle, and find out who I was talking to.

God, I used to screw with people. The best part was, there’s no caller ID, so they don’t know where you’re calling from. And the voice distortion makes voice ident pretty much impossible.

According to Patinkin, he had just lost his father to cancer, and he got this performance, and the sheer *vitriol* in the line ‘I want my father back you sonivabitch’, by imagining Count Rugen was the physical manifestation of the cancer that killed his father.

If you notice, Inigo matches all the physical injuries the Count gave him, both old and new, almost like Inigo were fulfilling the revenge of every pain Count Rugen caused him.

  27. Alec Warren on April 8, 2023 at 5:10 pm

This cuts out one of the best parts! After he kills the 6 fingered man, he doesn’t celebrate. There is no joy on his face. He just stands over him in silence. The victory is hallow, his father is still dead. It is a much deeper (and more subtle!) ending to the fight than you’d typically expect from Hollywood.

  28. TheCsaknorrisz on April 8, 2023 at 5:10 pm

There is a huge emphasis on why this duel is so short. The six fingered man is cruel, sadistic, dishonoroable and a coward. He is no match for Inigo and he knows that immediatly. But he cannot beat his nature so he mocks him. Later his slashes and defenses are shabby and slow.

Also, Inigo learnt something from Westley: he learnt to respect his opponent. He doesn’t play around, he goes straight to the point when he can.

  29. Allen Dishman on April 8, 2023 at 5:13 pm

Look up why Mandy Patinkin was able to preform this with such prowess. It’s super heartbreaking why, but worth the read.

  39. Kosta Rizo on April 8, 2023 at 5:29 pm

Inigo Montoya was honestly an unstoppable force. He got stabbed by Count Rugen not one, not two, but three times and kept holding on, and he just endured that pain. Then he wounded Count Rugen in every way that Count Rugen wounded him, poking him in his left shoulder and right arm, and cutting both his cheeks before delivering the final blow. Truly poetic justice
