The New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology

The New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, referred to more commonly as New Mexico Tech, was founded as the School of Mines in 1893 during the boon years of silver mining in the Magdalena Mountains west of Socorro, New Mexico.

During World War II, the School expanded its curriculum to include diverse new mathematics and physics courses for enlisted military personnel. When we located the VLA to the area, astrophysics was offered. Now, with a wide range of engineering, science, and humanities courses, New Mexico Tech is one of the top public colleges in the west.
