San Manuel Arizona Copper Mine

Most of this mine was underground in layered shafts almost 2 miles deep This is the open pit part of the mine. Mining started in 1955 and ended in 1999.

    This open pit mine makes the one I work at look like a child’s sandbox,,sad to see it close as I am sure it was the lifeline of the community

    I worked at the underground mine as a chute tapper during weekends in 1973/4 while studying at UofA. Taught me to value hard work and the union who looked after us "weekend warriors".

    my dad and grandfather worked there in the 60’s and 70’s. my dad built the catwalk around the 2nd stack. sad day when they knocked them down

    What BHP did is destroy this entire comunity. Property values gone to shit, Clarks sand and gravel, concrete gone. The minimarkets that have closed down. They claimed to have reached another ore pocket, had millions into upgrades into the smelter. Then they decided to screw this part of Arizona over . A foriegn company at that. Looks like Grupo will do the same thing in Kearny now.
