Short answer to your two questions is …..What is the definition of "toxic"?
Longer answer…..the "species" of mercury as they are often called, are; 1) metal mercury or quicksilver , 2) inorganic mercury, and 3) organic mercury. And yes, all three are officially classed as highly toxic. Dimethyl mercury is "super toxic" – one drop went through a rubber glove and killed professor Wetterhahn. One drop in the metal form killed two elderly people who vaporized it accidentally.
The correct name is New Idria, named after the world’s 2nd largest Hg mine in Idria, Slovenia (Europe)

more than likely the people there died from all of the mercury exposure . more than likely died from Lung and Kidney issues years later also immediately have brain issues lack of concentration , typical mercury exposure , today if that mine was running it would need protective gear for the workers and production buildings.

Mercury isn’t a carcinogen… its a neuro toxin however.
It won’t help your trade deficit. And frankly, who cares about that. Mercury is a global pollutant, toxic in all forms. In Japan, they are currently eating mercury contaminated dolphin meat.
Sadly, the roof of the mill has collapsed. When I went to visit the area in 2003, it was still intact.

mercury is a metal, dude. It’s the only metal that is a liquid at STP (standard temperature and pressure). And he is right, all metals form in rock and earth in compounds, and usually need to be smelted in order to obtain the material. If you’ve ever seen parts of large rock formations that are a dull orange, that’s from the iron that is present in the rocks rusting.
Mercury? They use sodium metal these days as the heat transfer in nuclear pants (but not all of them). I think water is more common.
Just imagine working there. It would be so interesting.
