The correct name is New Idria, named after the world’s 2nd largest Hg mine in Idria, Slovenia (Europe)

@mrsahonima it has been back and forth for years, I find it interesting that in a time where most government agency’s are scrambling to stay afloat, they finally make idra a superfund. Oh how I hate the EPA.

It won’t help your trade deficit. And frankly, who cares about that. Mercury is a global pollutant, toxic in all forms. In Japan, they are currently eating mercury contaminated dolphin meat.

MERCURY yeah is one of the most toxic substance on earth -.-

  6. endimion17 on April 18, 2022 at 10:45 am

@vmelkon Very few use sodium. Vast majority uses water (regular or heavy).

Still plenty of cinnabar but the govt and people have left. The toxins haven’t.

mercury is a metal, dude. It’s the only metal that is a liquid at STP (standard temperature and pressure). And he is right, all metals form in rock and earth in compounds, and usually need to be smelted in order to obtain the material. If you’ve ever seen parts of large rock formations that are a dull orange, that’s from the iron that is present in the rocks rusting.

how does a mercury comes from a rock

Sadly, the roof of the mill has collapsed. When I went to visit the area in 2003, it was still intact.

Short answer to your two questions is …..What is the definition of "toxic"?
Longer answer…..the "species" of mercury as they are often called, are; 1) metal mercury or quicksilver , 2) inorganic mercury, and 3) organic mercury. And yes, all three are officially classed as highly toxic. Dimethyl mercury is "super toxic" – one drop went through a rubber glove and killed professor Wetterhahn. One drop in the metal form killed two elderly people who vaporized it accidentally.

more than likely the people there died from all of the mercury exposure . more than likely died from Lung and Kidney issues years later also immediately have brain issues lack of concentration , typical mercury exposure , today if that mine was running it would need protective gear for the workers and production buildings.

The naivety of the fifties. The Obama sponsored mercury export ban just signed into law will prevent USA from exporting mercury. So, all the recycled mercury from USA industries will stay in USA.

  24. yixnorb on April 18, 2022 at 11:15 am

Good riddance to cfl bulbs and t-stats with mercury, which is highly toxic and end up in landfills.

  25. k gonzales on April 18, 2022 at 11:16 am

lol how can you make a metal from a large bunch of hard cement rocks lol

  26. Safety Lucas on April 18, 2022 at 11:20 am

I wish they still made videos like this.

  27. rene kenshin on April 18, 2022 at 11:20 am

i bet those workers all died of poisoning if not cancer -.-

Mercury? They use sodium metal these days as the heat transfer in nuclear pants (but not all of them). I think water is more common.

ah man i was there last year dicking around in the mines and the ghost town before the freaking EPA shut it down……. LOL quicksilver and you, welcome to the future of atomic power! HAHA what a simpler time of life 1950 was.

thats where all metals come from

  31. GSRJosh33 on April 18, 2022 at 11:24 am

1944 a Nazi sub "U-859" carrying 34 tons of this substance was found on the ocean floor. At the time the main known uses were thermometers and thermostats. So why did Hitler need this metal? To create and anti-gravity machine that would help them turn the war. Well it went down to late and the info was found by the US through interagation. U-859 Look it up!

  33. mrsahonima on April 18, 2022 at 11:28 am

Great historical document-thanks for posting this. By the way: New Idria, abandoned for decades now, has recently been designated an EPA Superfund site.

  38. AlienScientist on April 18, 2022 at 11:37 am
