more than likely the people there died from all of the mercury exposure . more than likely died from Lung and Kidney issues years later also immediately have brain issues lack of concentration , typical mercury exposure , today if that mine was running it would need protective gear for the workers and production buildings.

  7. Srecko Paskvale on April 22, 2023 at 11:54 pm

The correct name is New Idria, named after the world’s 2nd largest Hg mine in Idria, Slovenia (Europe)

Sadly, the roof of the mill has collapsed. When I went to visit the area in 2003, it was still intact.

    GREAT FOOTAGE!

Short answer to your two questions is …..What is the definition of "toxic"?
Longer answer…..the "species" of mercury as they are often called, are; 1) metal mercury or quicksilver , 2) inorganic mercury, and 3) organic mercury. And yes, all three are officially classed as highly toxic. Dimethyl mercury is "super toxic" – one drop went through a rubber glove and killed professor Wetterhahn. One drop in the metal form killed two elderly people who vaporized it accidentally.

Still plenty of cinnabar but the govt and people have left. The toxins haven’t.

ah man i was there last year dicking around in the mines and the ghost town before the freaking EPA shut it down……. LOL quicksilver and you, welcome to the future of atomic power! HAHA what a simpler time of life 1950 was.

  18. madjimms on April 23, 2023 at 12:08 am

    Mercury isn’t a carcinogen… its a neuro toxin however.

  19. Divocwax on April 23, 2023 at 12:09 am

It won’t help your trade deficit. And frankly, who cares about that. Mercury is a global pollutant, toxic in all forms. In Japan, they are currently eating mercury contaminated dolphin meat.

MERCURY yeah is one of the most toxic substance on earth -.-

  24. VV Egon Spengler on April 23, 2023 at 12:16 am

Mercury? They use sodium metal these days as the heat transfer in nuclear pants (but not all of them). I think water is more common.

  25. greatdestroyer1 on April 23, 2023 at 12:18 am

@mrsahonima it has been back and forth for years, I find it interesting that in a time where most government agency’s are scrambling to stay afloat, they finally make idra a superfund. Oh how I hate the EPA.

  26. k gonzales on April 23, 2023 at 12:20 am

lol how can you make a metal from a large bunch of hard cement rocks lol

  27. Seth Aque on April 23, 2023 at 12:22 am

Aluminum is a toxic metal had used to make Aircrafts.

  28. Safety Lucas on April 23, 2023 at 12:22 am

I wish they still made videos like this.

  29. mrsahonima on April 23, 2023 at 12:24 am

Great historical document-thanks for posting this. By the way: New Idria, abandoned for decades now, has recently been designated an EPA Superfund site.

  30. endimion17 on April 23, 2023 at 12:25 am

@vmelkon Very few use sodium. Vast majority uses water (regular or heavy).

  31. CaptainChips on April 23, 2023 at 12:26 am

mercury is a metal, dude. It’s the only metal that is a liquid at STP (standard temperature and pressure). And he is right, all metals form in rock and earth in compounds, and usually need to be smelted in order to obtain the material. If you’ve ever seen parts of large rock formations that are a dull orange, that’s from the iron that is present in the rocks rusting.

  32. AlienScientist on April 23, 2023 at 12:28 am

Mercury can also be used for antigravity…

  33. yixnorb on April 23, 2023 at 12:29 am

Good riddance to cfl bulbs and t-stats with mercury, which is highly toxic and end up in landfills.

  34. k gonzales on April 23, 2023 at 12:31 am

    i’m talking about mercury

  36. rene kenshin on April 23, 2023 at 12:36 am

Mercury is highly toxic and carcinogenic which is very very bad for health -_-

  37. GSRJosh33 on April 23, 2023 at 12:37 am

1944 a Nazi sub "U-859" carrying 34 tons of this substance was found on the ocean floor. At the time the main known uses were thermometers and thermostats. So why did Hitler need this metal? To create and anti-gravity machine that would help them turn the war. Well it went down to late and the info was found by the US through interagation. U-859 Look it up!

  38. Caden Fairholm on April 23, 2023 at 12:37 am

Just imagine working there. It would be so interesting.

  39. Divocwax on April 23, 2023 at 12:38 am

The naivety of the fifties. The Obama sponsored mercury export ban just signed into law will prevent USA from exporting mercury. So, all the recycled mercury from USA industries will stay in USA.
