Loaded BNSF fracking sand train Westminster, CO

Although rail traffic has been down lately, the BNSF sand train is still making the rounds. This sand is used in the oil industry for fracking. It is likely heading for the Green River oil shale formation where estimates of 1-3 trillion barrels of oil are underground in Utah and Colorado.

What exactly does this mean, is this sand from oil wells or is this sand from underground tunnels?
