I thought it was supposed to be about California not Montana
The Lakota Sioux arrived in the Black Hills of Dakota in 1770 after being driven out of Minnesota by other Tribes. The Cheyenne traded horses to the Sioux here & taught them to ride before they became bitter enemies. The Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1804 queried of the Gold hammered latches on a Chief’s leather coat. They were told that the Gold was a Gift to his Father from a red bearded trader who spoke French & would Trap for Fur & Swing from a rope off the Mountain Chiseling Gold off of the Cliff Face year after year. The Gold Vain was as thick as a Buffalo the Chief exclaimed spanning across the Cliff. Sixty-Six years later, Geologist Vandeveer Hayden heard of an Indian tale of a Jedediah Smith who swung from the Mountains Hammering out Gold from a huge Gold Vain in his Geological travels westward in the early 1870’s. Once back in Washington DC he found the Lewis & Clark reference in the National Archives. He strongly recommended a Department of Geology for the U.S. telling President U.S. Grant everything. Meanwhile word leaked & a thousand men led by General George Armstrong Custer started the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1874. Hence creating hostility with the Sioux. The US Geological Survey was established in 1879. The first woman Geologist Florence Bascom found the ‘Mother Load’ in 1901 with her Fathers Spyglass and was ordered to keep it Top Secret by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt and she was rewarded with a position at the US Geological Survey. President McKinley was shot by the Autumn & Theodore became President & wanted to carve out and preserve National Park Lands from the U.S. Public Lands which were for sale very cheap to the Public. Guess what area in particular he wanted to keep from being developed. Mhmm. While President Theodore could not be contacted for two months as he was in this remote American Wilderness. Extensive Mechanical Mining Operations finally began from 1927 to 1941. The Operations until this point were chiefly exploratory by panning rivers with some minor veins being dug. The New Deal Public Works Projects put supplied desperate cheap labor for sculpting in the middle of nowhere during a great Depression from 1933 to 1939. President Calvin Coolidge seemed to have no clue of the Gold coming out. President Herbert Hoover did dig in for his cut. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who knew the Family Secret was groomed for the Presidency for such time as this. J. Edgar Hoover, no relation, knew all & got his pay off with a Lifetime position as FBI Director running J. Epstein style ‘Honey Pots’ to entrap Politicians & Business leaders for Black mail Control. Finally as ‘Cover’ for the Mining Operations Four Presidential Faces were carved into Mount Rushmore.

I’d have chosen overland. To see the United States in its untouched glory, must have been beautiful. Yeah, I know it would have been incredibly dangerous, but I’d still do it.
Wow! Dumb people are willing to work really hard for "easy money".
Gold Fever,Thxs.
This documentary is a million feet away from making one dollar! *(FACEPALM)*
They had Post Offices back in 1800’s? HA…..😭😂😂😂🙌🏾

wasnt this the This Old House original host? always liked him…
The dredge ban is because the dredges were .. to say it lightly ..way to many in the recreation area kayackers etc , included the fish and the eggs ..as many as 30 dredges could be seen in one day on the river according to a bystander.. So I don’t think it will ever be unbanned..
I was thinking to myself, “The log cabin part reminds me of ‘This Old House’”. Lol, my instincts proved right when the host identified himself as Steve Thomas, lol!

I’d give my left nut to have been able to have lived during this time & place.
Can’t imagine how many lode miners died of mercury poisoning.

The only thing that kept me awake during this documentary was when he said "countless brothels". (Someone needs to teach them hoes how to count!)

They just WALKED across the US?! i am so lazy.
Although they did become a little zealous in carrying-out the restoration of justice, vigilantes of what’s now western Montana were definitely the good guys.
