Since Oatman only has a population of 135 now, that’s a lot of mine people. In the hey day of Oatman’s gold mine I have heard 3500 people lived there and other reports of many, many more. Lots of vacant homes and buildings in the area have been razed due to taxation.
Yes, they have been mining there for almost 20 years now and totally screwed up a place of historical value by obliterating almost ever trace of the old town that used to be there by covering the place over with tailing piles and containment ponds. I hope the mine is closed down for good. It never should have been re-opened in the first place. The Tourist Trap fringe set in Oatman would be screaming bloody murder if this mining company had messed up their town site the way they did the Goldroad one. But I’ve heard the same company owns the old Tom Reed mine, so Oatman might be the next town to get covered up with new tailing piles.
When l was a kid in the 70’s we used to go camping there, sad to see it is now, There was a lot of old rock houses and cool things to see. The curved cement wall thing was a shaft that went straight down a long aways 500 ft. some say 1500 ft? l think there were 2 side by side. l wish l had picture of it now.
Rare opportunity to see a mine area that has re-opened time and again. Great panorama of the area near Sitgreaves Pass. Part of our history that nearby ghost town, Goldroad, is just relics now. Thanks for this.
