Finding a Lost California Gold Mine in the Sierra Nevada || Part One
In 1883, six miners found gold at the Providence Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This mine has long disappeared from all maps and mention, except for an earlier 1900s topo map. In this episode, my son and I set out by Jeep and foot to find this long lost mine, and see if there’s any evidence of its existence left.

You’re definitely on to something. The old topographic map. The history. The old roads. That was more than likely a tailings pile. If there is an old forgotten gold mine out there the tailings wouldn’t be far from the adit or portal (entrance) to the mine. Ore from the mine would be carted out and dumped near the entrance. The less distance they needed to travel to dump the ore the better. If I was you I’d go back up there preferably with another adult and do a more thorough search of the area. Nature tends to cover up or even bury forgotten stuff. The entrance could be covered by overgrowth or perhaps buried from a past slide. As far as a detector goes that $60 Amazon one won’t find you anything guaranteed!!! I’d recommend a Mine Lab 1000 as a starter detector. The better the detector the better your chances of finding gold. Invest in some basic prospecting gear. Learn basic geology associated with gold prospecting and gold mining so you know what to look for. Do some more research if possible on the area and history of the mine. See if you can find past records of how much gold was extracted from that mine and even why it closed. Be aware that if you do find that mine there are many dangers associated with old forgotten mines such as rockbursts, collapses, deadly air, deep shafts, and animals just to name a few examples. Definitely not a place for your son. If anything I’d bring a couple of hardworking trustworthy people to help you find out what’s out there. Definitely more I could say on your video but what I mentioned above is a good start in the right direction. You could definitely be onto something big but it will take a lot on your end to uncover what’s out there!!!

I remember my first father-son camping trip. My oldest boy was 3 at the time and we went out into south western Queensland here in Australia and had a fantastic time fishing and exploring old car wrecks and playing in the mud – my son took the worms after the first cast and insisted on carrying them for the rest of the day – no more fishing after that!
Since then I have been camping probably 40-50 times with both my sons – now 11 and 9. All over, remote, island, beach. My wife comes along about a 3rd of the time too. It is so fantastic – so good for their spirit and our bonds.
