Exploring The Desert Lode Star Mine – A California silver mine (part 1)

Exploring The Desert Lode Star Mine – A California silver mine (part 1)

In this video we drive our Willys Jeep through the desert to the Desert Lode Star Mine. The mine was started in 1880 when the rich ore vein was discovered. 100 miners were hired and sunk a huge shaft to access the silver vein. We descend several ladders to different working levels to explore this historic old mine. This is an interesting mine because of it’s layout with numerous stopes and shafts. There is a high danger factor also because of the many hidden false floors leading to 100 foot plus drops below. In part two we go deeper into the mine and are joined by Frank, from the YouTube channel Exploring Abandoned Mines And Unusual Places.

I like how you present your tour without the pretense of high drama and immanent danger but we are going ahead anyway.

Tom was this the biggest mine you have explored? It sure seemed like it. Did you wonder how many of the floors you were walking on were false floors after you came up on those 2 that showed that it was actually just boards you were walking on? What were the orange ribbons hanging down? Do folks repair the ladders for mine explorers like yourself? Sorry so many questions. Hahahaha

Loved it! That final example you show near the end of the video of the false floor is pretty striking. Yes, as you mention in the video, sometimes we don’t know what we’re walking on. Those false floors are dangerous!

Awesome adventure Tom! Wow that’s one of the craziest mines I’ve seen you explore. So many shafts and passageways. I have to catch up on my terminology though, what’s a windless? And whats a stoke? Great to see your old Jeep in the intro too.
