In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.
My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.
Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

I hope this dude was packing heat during these explorations. Hand held radio to.
I’m making it a mission in life to get out to visit the Cerro Gordo mine lounge
Very Fallout-esque!
Looks like there is asbestos in one of those tunnels. You might want to invest in a p100 respirator.
I hope this guy does not die in this town if he is there alone.
Carbide headlamps were used for the miners graffiti in the mines. The acetylene makes a lot of soot when burned near the wall. You probably know that by now.
When the camera is going fast through the tunnel it looked like someone having a colonoscopy 🙂
What is the blue up on the wall?
Where did you place the mannequin?
after buying all the necessities they recommended in the comment, you should buy a GPS tracker and put it in your pocket.
Gotta get TVR Justin out there with you.
Now that’s a MAN CAVE !!!
Your background music is a perfect match to your videos:)
The adventures you take the viewer on is beautiful and
very dangerous at the same time.
I love the historical vintage treasures left behind in your
ghost town. A time capsule to sleeping history.
15:12 Ghost Adventures "Zak Bagan" would love your
cave lounge! You drug all those things deep into that shaft or what ever it’s called?
Took lots of work, but paid off very well:)
Did you catch an EVP at 14:54 on camera? Just wondering.
In 2008 I went for an internship on a self sustaining farm in Colorado through ATTRA, some 6,000 feet in elevation
Fun Fact: We Did Have Satellite Internet, and could do things like post, but no video. It took an hour to get to the grocery store
Because You had so many switch backs to get to the bottom of the mountain.
Vlogs are a little interesting….however…..sorry to say that you are a sub optimal story teller.
I really hope you didn’t leave that stuff in there! And how the heck did you get it up to the mine if it was 3 miles from Cerro Gordo.
Good job on videos. Your rocking it in those old mines. Your great personality shows thru! I would really like to see a video on how you heard about this mine and the purchasing process.
Please let me live in your ghost town
you need a really good pair of hicking boots. they work great in snow & on rocks. Plus some socks too. Your ankles won’t get so sore & your tennie shoes are useless up there. Use them for around inside your home. Not trying to come across bossy but only trying to help ya.
I would love to sit in there with my friends
I want to see a video of the artifacts and treasures you were found in the time you’ve lived there.
Find a Masters or PhD student to do a thesis or dissertation on the mine.
You should contact Abandoned and Forgotten Places and see if they will come out and help you explore the mines . That’s all they do on their channel is mine exploring and explaining why miners do what they did. Maybe you guys can do a video together
Watch "Abandoned and Forgotten Places" on YouTube

Also, there is a nifty device called an Inreach, now owned by Garmin. Satellite based can’t get a signal inside a shaft but on mine I always do an auto text to a friend just before I crawl into a hole and with the text it automatically sends them a map with coordinates of exactly where you went in. In an emergency if you can mange to claw your way outside it has an SOS button that goes to a global answering system who then calls in the calvary. Have fun, be safe!
I spent 25 years on the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team. Since you’re doing much of this alone to help your rescuers find you, in case of an accident, always good to make a writtten log of where you are going, day and time, and then call someone when you get back. Or, you could just text a friend this info before you leave the house.
Hey man could I send you a parcel
Why don’t you get some decent boots?
Stash survival kits inside the mine lounge and on other parts of the mountain. Put a flag so you can find them easily if needed.
Far fing out!
Spooky lounge indeed.
A neat place to hide and survive when the world ends
AMAZING!
Imagine how scary it would be finding the lounge not knowing how it got there when in reality some dude made it
Have you been finding clothing or anything.
I’d keep a 38 on me if I were you but California is stupid with gun control so idk
When you go exploring the mines, put a flag or some marker that would tell people, he’s in that one. I hope you call someone on the days you go explore ans check in when you get home. One rung breaks in one of those ladders and you could be stuck. I hate to think Youtubers would be the first to know you stopped posting and raise the alarm?
Welp, just found this channel and its 2:43am.. looks like i won’t be sleeping til noon tomorrow.
You just have antique furniture collectors a heart attack.
Great bug out location if SHTF
Just imagine whoever finds this 100 years from now.
Where did the manacin go??!!
I am terrified that it’s peering round the corner somewhere. I know that, somehow, despite being in the UK, that thing will fuck me up one day. I can feel it.
4:29 i would SOOOO get a few lorries! Perhaps even get more track and an electric cart or locomotive to zoom through the mines!
just went to google and it says you bought it with another guy….where is he?
I like the channel, but If you could edit out the swearing that would be nice, because there is no reason for it. Good luck, and God bless.
Wow, that’s incredible! Such a beautiful sofa ♥
Living my dream! so cool
8:16 Same
i got afraid for him when he sat on the couch after saying "dont lean back"
Haha love it man
