In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.

THANK YOU!

My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.

Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.

The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.

The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.

The Los Angeles News once wrote:

“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”

In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.

It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

The type of things that might lead you here are interests in ghost towns, abandoned mining towns, abandoned cities, California history, the zombie apocalypse, ghost stories, scary stories, nature, death valley, lone pine CA, mines, exploring, overnight challenges, exploration, urban exploration and yes theory.

This is an old video, but kids… NEVER EVER EVER EVERY DO THIS!!! My God! At least tell people you’re going exploring and will check in at a predetermined time. This is massively irresponsible and YouTubers have a history of doing massively irresponsible things for the sake of views and that’s dangerous territory. That said… LOVE this series! But seriously… be smart and safe and teach smart and safe. Also, 10:32 looks like my recent colonoscopy

Sleeping in there would be legit the real life “paranormal activity ⛏ mining edition”. Just imagine sitting in that couch and hearing mining ⛏ sounds. Legit Heart attack material.

A part of me really wants to join you and a part of me is also screaming about the safety of this. The never ending fight between instincts and my degree in Archaeology.

theres always something creepy yet so cool about old mineshafts. also it’s awesome that you turned/ are turning one into a lounge.

I’m a geologist and I find these videos really fascinating. Have you tried to collect all the mining documents from the last 150 years? They must have most of them in local libraries/geological survey databases. Nowadays, with the right software and expertise you could map out the mine shatfs, build a reliable map where the mines are – identify them using coordinates from the old claims, etc. – and even get a large 3D model using the mine plans. I would love to see some geology/mining expert in your video one day, to better understand how the ores were formed and what can be still there underground.

  26. Rita Turner on December 1, 2021 at 3:45 pm

That land has a lot of homes for wild animals. Have you ever found a wild animal, snake, rat or bat in a cave? You definitely taught me a lot about mines through your adventures. That is amazing that the tobacco tin kept the location paper untouched for 96 years out in the open. Crazy. So the ancestors of that person don’t own the mine? Once you bought the land, you got to inherit all those mines? Maybe instead of the resort, you should create haunted mines, mine tours and ghost tours through the haunted buildings in town.

I really wish you would txt someone like a friend or family member and let them know you’re going down to explore. Let them know the general vicinity of where you’re exploring that day and that if they don’t hear from you by X time to come look for you. You never know what could happen man. You could slip and fall and break a leg. Your rope or ladder could break. Especially those 100 + year old ladders. I feel like it would just be smart to have that backup… Ya know…

In the one with the track and possible bobcat, what’s the bluish rock around the entrance? I am a lapidary artist and just curious if it’s cuttable material?

    Awesome!

  32. jim aldridge on December 1, 2021 at 3:51 pm

I might be addicted to this channel..
Watching a guy walk into caves and play with rocks. Lol

BTW, it is really amazing, the ladders these guys built 100yrs ago can still be climbed many of them.

    Be safe!

  34. dan picard on December 1, 2021 at 3:52 pm

i love caves and always thought it would be cool to make a cave house. you know you could possibly live more comfortably if you sealed a space in one of those nicer tunnels in winter months?

  35. Gail Barrett on December 1, 2021 at 3:53 pm

So dangerous to explore alone in case something were to happen!

  36. Robert Seecharran on December 1, 2021 at 3:54 pm

lmao if this is actually is a ghost town then there must be some ghost… so imagine that your a ghost from the 1800s then you see a guy claiming that he bought the whole town also then he is moves your furniture into an old mine and talking to a weird device aka a camera

to me that’s kind of funny to think of ghost must be hella confused

  37. Towel musk man on December 1, 2021 at 3:55 pm

What is the temperature inside the cave?

Here is a Tom Scott video about a battery that has lasted 176 years and counting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtQGYz4f3YQ
May be fun to find the theoretically longest shelf life battery you can get your hands on an wire up a LED in that lamp. Imagine a future explorer a century from now flipping a switch and having that light turn on.

  41. Roarrr Trip on December 1, 2021 at 3:59 pm

absolutely stunning experience. You will need probably a couple of life to visit all the tunnels lol. what’s the eerie sound at 14:55???

  42. John Ivy on December 1, 2021 at 3:59 pm

You should Flag the Cave entrance so you can Revisit them! Jus say’s! And no potty mouth. Thanks

"Imagine how creepy this mannequin would be in the cave lounge?"
Jan (from Corridor Crew): Yea, tell me about it!

  44. blackend616 on December 1, 2021 at 4:00 pm

I miss the music you play at the 10 minutes point…when walking through the tunnels…ita really true melody of ghostly/abandoned towns. Good your keeping the place alive…really dig the song should play more often for those havent heard yet.

    Peace Brent✌

I’ve been exploring old Ghost towns and caves since I was a kid as it was my father’s passion and now a hobby mine (pun intended). I admire your courage but I agree that you are not well equipped for the “what-if’s.” I have read a handful of comments on items that would really help for those situations and I agree. One item that I did not read in here is, in my experience, important and life-saving when exploring mines and knowing that you live pretty far from civilization. Anti-venom or at least a snake bite kit. Seriously it can save your life and/or ability to get to help when the rattlesnakes decide that you’re a threat.

  46. David Norris on December 1, 2021 at 4:02 pm

I’ll bet the guy that had the ladder building contract for this place was really rich as well
    Lol

  47. ReticentNova on December 1, 2021 at 4:03 pm

It’s a shame that a town built by people chasing the American dream is responsible for a city where everyone wants to destroy the American Dream.

  48. Tomas Viane on December 1, 2021 at 4:06 pm

A few solar panels and you got yourself a little ‘man-cave’.

  49. Cindy Orange Neely on December 1, 2021 at 4:09 pm

Absolutely amazing!! Love all the gorgeous rocks!! You should start selling some of the rocks on eBay. You could package up small stones from each mine you explore and have the name of the mine and type of stone on the package and sell them. I would DEFINITELY buy some of that bluish green stone I see!!
