In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.

THANK YOU!

My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.

Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.

The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.

The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.

The Los Angeles News once wrote:

“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”

In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.

It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

Every time I see him go into a mine when nobody else is there nor knows where he is, I can’t help but think about Timothy Treadwell. And the SNL skit, "Bad Idea Jeans" 😀

Who’s "we" that this host continues to reference? The premise of this channel is that one man spent his life’s savings to buy a ghost town. Sounds like like there’s deception going on and scripted episodes. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a paid actor.

Seriously? A Mannequin?! I literally cannot wait for someone in the future, 50 – 100 yrs at least to explore that Mine shaft then freaks out because they’ll see a human silhouette chillin in the freaking dark.

I don’t think I’d be searching those mines with less than an UZI machine gun.

Are you afraid one of the areas under the mountain might collapse? Every time you go into one, I’m nervous for you! Be careful!

you should find a huge cavern and then set up a bunch of tea lights . I"m a photographer and I do it a lot in places like that. I just did a mine last weekend. It will light up the entire place and it looks super cool. Message me if you want me to send you some pictures as examples.. It will blow you away how cool it looks in person and for pictures.. Also the lighting is enough for video with enough tea lights

  20. Jeffrey on May 29, 2021 at 6:08 pm

Him: "Worried about meeting a bob-cat alone"

Me: Why’s he so worried about a bob cat? They’re tiny and shy as hell.

I’ve just realized he’s mixing up bobcats which are small lynxs and Mountain lions which are very much not small.

I know Brent is never going to read this, but if you ever find yourself in a situation where you suspect a big cat lies unseen at one end of a tunnel, do not take your eyes off that direction and back out if you have to. Think of predatory cats as Weeping Angels.

  29. sexkrazedpanda on May 29, 2021 at 6:19 pm

Have you thought of setting up so trail cams in some of the abandoned mines? The one with rails and obvious animal signs would be cool to monitor. And see who made it their home.

  30. Doug's Classic Auto Restoration on May 29, 2021 at 6:19 pm

Love your stuff buddy. Maybe its my OCD but why not clean up all the boards around the place as you go. Plus you could ask for volunteers to help bring all the wood back to a main area so you can use to rebuild the town. Then mark the mines based on what you find. Seems like a walking lawsuit waiting to happen and it would be hard to say its private property when you keep inviting people to come check it out.

  40. jared on May 29, 2021 at 6:29 pm

Can anyone explain why he said it "wasn’t his place" to take the denim out of the mine? Seems like a reasonable way to finance the project, plus he owns the property, does he not own everything within the mines as well?

  41. fred reeves on May 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm

Dude… major mistake traversing those mines with one hand while holding a camera. Always wear a hard hat, always wear quality gloves, always take two flashlights. I would make one of those lights one that you can strap to your held or helmet, and a body cam like those worn by police. The point here is, you always want both hands as free as possible, and nice bright wide lights to see where you are going. Lastly, eyeware is quality important. Living by yourself in your ghost town is one thing, going into those shafts alone is suicidal… safety first beyond anything else! We want to see more of your adventures and projects, and we can’t if you’re confined to a hospital bed. Stay safe my friend! You said it toward the beginning of this episode, what you do is very dangerous. : )

  49. Lslice on May 29, 2021 at 6:36 pm

The one that you think a bobcat might be in, I would go back later and close the front of the hole and leave it closed for a month before exploring, either to make sure that it finds a new place to live or to starve it to death before exploring
