In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.

THANK YOU!
My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.
Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

as a hand tool woodworker those wood planes in the background caught my eye, can you show them up close and Esther a story behind them
gotta put an old tv with a VHS player in that lounge . with some old westurn movies
That graffiti is really cool – at my old house, there was a school and all the kids engraved their names into the brick chimney, and the daughter of the farm owner used her diamond ring to write her name in one of the glass panes – the house is 230+ years old
Maybe stabilize the hillside around the entrance first?
Seriously, you need to turn it into a "Haunted Mining Town" attraction for Halloween…between the creepy buildings, ancient artifacts, mines….jeesh it would be a haunted tour "goldmine."
Your Lucky, do you know how many of us would love to come out there and help
The lumber in some of the mines is modern milled wood.
How does the electricity work? Does he get a cellphone signal to upload? Just wondering because I did not hear about that in episode 1.
très surréaliste cette idée de salon au milieu de la mine . J’aime beaucoup !!!
I really hope that he is using that oxygen level notifier in these explorations.
everyone knows this guy…
X2
Is that turquoise in the top left corner of the frame toward the end of the video in the lounge?
The "shirt" is dunnage used to tamp down blasting powder and/or dynamite.
Hey that’s cool wilson’s my last name
lol you are starting to sound like a creepy guy alone talking to himself lol i love the adventure
Get electricity in the lounge and put a refrigerator and stock it with old style sassafras.
Great video my friend
You need to get a camera on wheels (probably with a rope to hold on to) so you can send it back to small spaces or into the one with the tracks. Obviously gotta watch out for those crazy deep mines.
This is so interesting!
love your videos
I think it is important for you to remember that nobody before you went into the mines alone. Find an apprentice or someone to go with you or to be above ground while you go underground. Be safe in your explorations. I have spent my life exploring… way before the internet. Be safe, let someone know where you are, and enjoy the find!
Ah shit it’s in California. I didn’t know that or i wouldn’t have ever subbed.
Crazy concept ~
Is so awesome you are definitely an old old soul
isn’t great to be able to keep everything you find how lucky is that??
I would leave all the stuff in the museum where was in good condition because one day if you want to open the spot up for tourists you would want to keep that in the best condition possible for people’s viewing. Not to mention to preserve history instead of dragging it over the ground like that
Instead of walking to what you believe is a mine do recon with your drone. Save you a lot of time.
Swiftly terrified when you were going through the cave and climbing up and up those ladders thinking they were going to break any minute did you ever hear of a drone I hope that you get one hahaha
Coolest lounge! 👍🏻 I can a,most feel he silence?
I was just about to ask if you get scared up there doing that by yourself, then you bend down in the mine saying “ what the f#*# was that” haha lol 😂 yep 😆
Understatement of the year at 7:25 "…just doesn’t seem like the best idea". No offense, but you wouldn’t know a 3rd runner up idea if it bit you on the bobcat.
4:38 when you said that my ears turned super sonic and i thought i heard a squeaking cart in the distance in your video. It took about a minute and a half for me to figure out it’s the roller thing in my heater squeaking. Dah hell? i was so freaking out for you. Then i thought to myself, "he added that in". Then I realized what it was. Lmmfao
whats 3 dollars a day translate into todays wages? $30 hr?
White paint would brighten it up a bit.
I’m sure you’ve already figured this out (I’m watching your backlog of episodes in order), but the “charcoal” graffiti was made by miners using their carbide lamps. It is soot so your assumption was really close, but the soot specifically came from a lamp’s acetylene flame and gives the graffiti a distinct look and a distinct sense of time, place, and purpose. You can find this kind of graffiti in mines all over, but it’s preserved especially well in the dry conditions of the southwest!
@6:10 wow, like something from a LOTR story.
So COOL 😎!!! Be careful up there!!!
The snow there’s your water
I’d also add maybe getting an electronic gimbal, so when you walk through the tunnels the footage can be super smooth…
You’re brave to be doing that alone! Thanks for the video from Ottawa, Canada.
Where do I sign up for a tour?
Did you ping the natty lite can down the shaft behind you?
I have had this as a suggested channel for awhile now but I never clicked on it. Boy have I been missing out. Fuckin incredible!!! Absolutely amazing!! I will be watching every video now
A bobcat will shit on your lounge sofa. You heard it here first.
You got guts, man. More power to you! ( I found this channel through Kara and Nate.) 👍
Just found this channel. Very interesting. I’m a geographical/charting/mapping surveyor. It would be so much fun to map out this place.
How did the town get it’s name??
If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore.
This is Minecraft irl
