In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.

THANK YOU!

My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.

Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.

The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.

The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.

The Los Angeles News once wrote:

“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”

In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.

It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

The black graffiti is called miner’s graffiti; they wrote using their carbide light. That couch is an antique couch, as well as the light.

  11. Justus Schaaf on February 2, 2021 at 9:28 am

Man I’d absolutely love living in something like this. Away from everyone and just repairing old things from back in the 1800’s. The best damn dream come to life for you my friend. Just imagining a horse ride from town to your cabin on the hill somewhere 😩

  22. indulgence 88 on February 2, 2021 at 9:35 am

That’s cool they should cave in if anything over winter from the weight of the show pressing down keeping them packed well in my opinion.😎

  27. clintrock on February 2, 2021 at 9:43 am

You should ask levi Strauss or some other company to make a limited run of 500 or so pair of new century Levi’s and sell them for 250 or whatever to put profit into town.maybe Lewisville open a store in your new hotel. Just random thoughts.

  28. ooglek on February 2, 2021 at 9:43 am

    Great stuff! I’m jealous.

Time to get you some new flashlights!

Get a D4V2 Flashlight with the SST20 2700K 95CRI LED and a Samsung 30Q 18650 battery and a charger. Another alternative is a Convoy C8+ with an Osram LED — green or white. Highly recommended for exploration!!! Terrible zoomy flashlights on Amazon are usually terrible. I have opinions. 🙂

  32. Erich Haley on February 2, 2021 at 9:46 am

How much did it cost to just buy an abandoned town? If you’re the official owner, what are your plans for the town?

  33. indulgence 88 on February 2, 2021 at 9:50 am

Definitely put a map with a you are here 🔹

  34. Lakro Mani on February 2, 2021 at 9:52 am

You should use a GSP and plot inn all the mine so you get them on a map (if you not already do that) 🙂

  35. Mr. Anonymous on February 2, 2021 at 9:52 am

Get a couple glowsicks and throw them down that mine shaft in the new lounge just to see how deep it is. btw get some light in there during the summer. I bet snakes are infested in the summer since its so hot. Get bit by a rattle and you’re dead.

Found you through Kara and Nate, looking forward to watching all your videos and what is to come. Glad to see you have proper boots on now 😉

  37. Rick B1 on February 2, 2021 at 9:57 am

You should invite Jeff Williams to inspect your mines… He is a geologist and a great guy… He is also a YouTuber… I think you have many ways to make some money there…

  38. still Living on February 2, 2021 at 9:58 am

This video is the only one I have not watched all the way through, and I want to thank you for cleaning up the language, not that I really care, except for the fact that kid’s watch. My nephew’s really like the adventures you go on, and my sister has been letting them watch the newer one’s that don’t have the f word. Good luck, and God bless.

  39. Speeding Atheist on February 2, 2021 at 9:58 am

After the first video I thought about having horrible pain, e.g. tooth infection. Then I see you checking out mines in sneakers.
Yeah, you don’t worry at all. You should be a firefighter in shorts next.

  40. MikeOrkid on February 2, 2021 at 9:59 am

Carbide headlamps were used for the miners graffiti in the mines. The acetylene makes a lot of soot when burned near the wall. You probably know that by now.

  41. Connor Matthews on February 2, 2021 at 10:01 am

gigantic balls going in to that mine mate, danger dave

  42. Candace Jackson on February 2, 2021 at 10:02 am

Started watching thanks to Kara and Nate, only 2nd video in and my curiosity is peaked but my anxiety for your safety and going into these places alone, unprepared, definitely has been high.

  43. sean avery on February 2, 2021 at 10:02 am

  45. John Cowan on February 2, 2021 at 10:03 am

    How cool is that Lounge

  46. Ian Jackson on February 2, 2021 at 10:04 am

Do you get the coordinates for each of these mines you find?

  47. Leonard Whitlow II on February 2, 2021 at 10:06 am

Do you have a GPS? You should record where all these entrances are. Rescuers would have the location to search for you.

  48. augis157 on February 2, 2021 at 10:09 am

You know, i’m all for it, exploring mines an shit, but dude, you know that a lot of bobcats and wild animals like to live there… you have a gun…. YOU JUST MIGHT WANT TO BRING THAT WITH YOU! your entering a lair of predetory animals…

  49. Ronnie Young on February 2, 2021 at 10:09 am

  50. JerryCan on February 2, 2021 at 10:11 am

Watching all your videos. I’ve worked in underground mines and something you need to know before going too deep.. if you can’t light a lighter, start heading back. There isn’t enough oxygen for you
