In this episode, I explore many of Cerro Gordo’s abandoned mines! I went into dozens of old mines over the course of a few days and settled on one right up the hill from town to put a little lounge area in. It’s probably not safe enough for guests to visit, but it’s my own little getaway.

My name is Brent I purchased the former mining town of “Cerro Gordo” this past July 13th (Friday the 13th). Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve moved from Austin, Texas up to the town and I’m living alone in this abandoned ghost town trying to make it into a place for more people to enjoy.
Sometimes it’s beautiful and amazing, sometimes it’s terrifying and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I grew up in the flatlands of Florida, so this is all new territory for me.
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

What is the temperature inside the cave?
I’ve been exploring old Ghost towns and caves since I was a kid as it was my father’s passion and now a hobby mine (pun intended). I admire your courage but I agree that you are not well equipped for the “what-if’s.” I have read a handful of comments on items that would really help for those situations and I agree. One item that I did not read in here is, in my experience, important and life-saving when exploring mines and knowing that you live pretty far from civilization. Anti-venom or at least a snake bite kit. Seriously it can save your life and/or ability to get to help when the rattlesnakes decide that you’re a threat.
Man you need a Netflix documentary there…..
Don’t you have proper boots? Have you considered a little drone with wheels to peek into these mines so you don’t meet a bobcat?

That land has a lot of homes for wild animals. Have you ever found a wild animal, snake, rat or bat in a cave? You definitely taught me a lot about mines through your adventures. That is amazing that the tobacco tin kept the location paper untouched for 96 years out in the open. Crazy. So the ancestors of that person don’t own the mine? Once you bought the land, you got to inherit all those mines? Maybe instead of the resort, you should create haunted mines, mine tours and ghost tours through the haunted buildings in town.

Absolutely amazing!! Love all the gorgeous rocks!! You should start selling some of the rocks on eBay. You could package up small stones from each mine you explore and have the name of the mine and type of stone on the package and sell them. I would DEFINITELY buy some of that bluish green stone I see!!

I love this. This guy is equally awesome and really daft… the shoes!! and when he started wandering around the adits I got worried for him, he gets lost alot. If it gets up and running I’d love to stay there.
Is it possible there could still be silver or gold in those mines or caves? I would think if they started digging and finding silver in one spot its got to be all around in some way. Also, you arenso brave going in alone only because I would freak myself out lol

You should turn a part of one of the mines into a giant slide.
Dude, you need to be carrying a backpack with an emergency first aid kit , real lights not your phone light, flashlights headlamps some food emergency food, emergency shelter things like that if you’re going to go do this kind of stuff real, and get real hiking boots don’t be wearing trainers out there that’s crazy, wear some jeans or duck pants or something they can take some abuse, not sweats, etc. etc.
A few solar panels and you got yourself a little ‘man-cave’.

i love caves and always thought it would be cool to make a cave house. you know you could possibly live more comfortably if you sealed a space in one of those nicer tunnels in winter months?
It’s a shame that a town built by people chasing the American dream is responsible for a city where everyone wants to destroy the American Dream.
