DIY Shop First Aid Station – For the Shipping Container Shop
Making a DIY First Aid Station for my tiny shipping container shop. In the video I’ll show you how I repurposed a generic AED cabinet by adding shelving, aluminum trim, first aid supplies and create a pedal/pulley mechanism for a ‘unique’ take on wound irrigation. Overall it was a fun and creative process build and I hope it might give you some ideas or inspiration for a build of your own.

Walking into the house, bleeding on the floor…LOL. Years ago, I was clearing some brush on one side of the yard, using a machete, while my wife and daughter were doing something else on the other side. Holding some stuff off to the side with one hand and swinging the machete with the other, the machete "bounced" a bit and bit right into the back of the hand not holding it, cutting into the backs of three fingers. Clearly, this was not the sort of thing I wanted my wife and/or daughter to see, since they might have freaked out a bit. So I casually dropped the machete and walked back to the house, leaving a trail behind me. When I got to the rear deck, I cupped the injured hand with the other to keep the blood from getting on the wood, and quickly went inside and rinsed off at the kitchen sink. Then I cupped it again, and went quickly to the mast bathroom, where first aid supplies were, so I could clean it up and bandage it. I avoided dripping any blood on the carpets! Yay, me! However, while cleaning the wounds, I noticed my vision going a bit "tunnel", dark at the outsides, and realized this would be a bad time and place to black out. To this day, I have some nice scars to remind me of that particular incident. Then there was the incident involving the pruning saw. And the other one with a knife that sort of stuck into my leg. When asked if I have any "piercings", I have to check whether they mean intentional ones only.
He drills out a bunch of holes, then says "Now the boring part is done." OK, I don’t know if that was intentional or not, but it made me laugh anyway. Drilling holes is definitely boring. But you should always position the tool carefully, and keep body parts out of danger, so you do not yourself become bored. See above.
Would love to hear how the greenhouse is going. Also, are you high desert or low desert? What are you spring and summer temps?

Only thing I think you should add to that first aid station is a tourniquet. Just my opinion. Keep up the great work love the channel and the videos

Very neat. I have one by the garage door (without the floor wash mechanism) mounted on a French cleat so that it can quickly be taken to the scene of any incident in the garden or, more likely, the woodpile.
So…my paint-stained and oil soaked rag that I keep nearby in case of an emergency seems inadequate after watching your video! No, seriously, as always your attention to detail and ability to implement your ideas are always top-shelf. You provide all of us a master-level shop class with each video. Hope all is well on the homestead.

Great build. The only thing that I can see adding is either a good pair of splinter tweezers and/or some gray electrical tape. The tape will sometimes "pull" a splinter and any of the 3M colored or phase tapes don’t leave the residue the way that the normal black tape does. And if you can’t get the splinter out right away the tape keeps it from snagging on everything.
Interesting project, I like the creativity right up until "almost" the end, no offense though. If you add a stronger spring that could be disengaged with the hand, it could squirt the water at a faster rate.

Thanks to all that have mentioned to add a tourniquet and medical super glue. I already have the medical grade super glue in our house first aid kit.. but just forgot to add it in here. Interesting. I recently got a very nice used first aid cabinet that is wall mounted. We’ve all seen those many times before. It came out of a medical office. It’s good sized, already has shelves and compartments for everything. Works for me.

This is such a great idea. Now you need to make one with veterinary care items for the chickens and goats. Maybe minus the special relaxation tool…. or who knows, maybe the goats will want their own as they get adjusted. 😁
This is fun. I’ve been planning my own First Aid station in my garage. I wanted to repurpose an old steel storage box too! But I wonder if a "tailgate" style door is more practical. When I’m working, all counter spaces are occupied by tools and materials. Having a clean surface to unbox supplies would be nice.

Nice job. You need some paper towels to dry cuts off a bit before putting anything sticky to the wound.
Personally I believe you may need a water bottle that can be brought to the wound. Why not have both? Nice. Where is your CAT tourniquet?

Yeah I was gonna say SMART Water isn’t very smart… Its owned by Coco Cola and their water isn’t very clean. Its full of heavy metals etc… If you use an Electrolysis on the water you’ll be shocked how much rubbish it contains ppm. Do you have and use a Water Distiller?
Love the build, maybe add a catch basin with a drain hole that runs outside. That will keep the water to the exterior. Would be best in areas where water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

Two additional items that I have in my shop a pair of tweezers and a lighted magnifying lens. Metal and wood splinters are the irritation in my barn although I collect my share of rose and berry thorns when mowing. An eyewash squeeze bottle of water provides irrigation and does not crack when frozen over winter.

Nice project.
Given that you weld, I’d suggest more stuff for treating burns to complement all of the clotting and wound care stuff you already have. Tweezers and a magnifier for splinter removal and a mirror on the door next to the kit for checking eyes would not be a bad idea for a shop FAK, either. And maybe a spray can of Solarcaine for sunburns.
I’m always amazed at your inventiveness. I’m honestly a little surprised that we didn’t see some PVC fittings and a valve connected to the water bottle so you can just step on the pedal, open the valve, and squeeze the bottle all without touching the cap.
By this time next year I bet we’ll see you add an actual hand- and tool-washing sink under the awning of the shop, fed by your nearby water tanks.
Then you’ll add a wall-mounted fan out there with a water mister, to keep cool on some of those warm summer afternoons.
And eventually you’ll have a TV on the outside of the shop to keep you entertained while you’re working. 🙂

Medical cabinet and fire extinguisher are two good ideas for any shop. But the added medicinal alcohol and glass really boost this project. Great job!
