In this video we were not prepared for what we found. Instead of a dry arid desert, we encountered a lush mountainside forest. Not expecting water, we only had metal detectors. In terms of success in prospecting, this trip was a bust but I figured some people out there may want to see video of the region…so I decided to throw a quick video together.

We did have other purposes in the area (Tucson Gem and Mineral Show video to come!) So the trip was not a bust.

We were in Coronado National Forest near Sonoita (South of Tucson) in there Greaterville area of Arizona. We were looking for the Gold Prospectors Association of America’s Lucky Strike Claim but had a hard time finding it. So, we just hit the trails hiking and swinging the sticks. Metal detecting and prospecting activities that do not significantly disturb the soil are permitted without a Plan of Operation (POO) with the Forest Service. So, we just went on public ground…which led to a lot of modern trash and bullets.

More than anything this video shows people what to expect if they go to this area to prospect. There was water (a lot) in February of this year so I wish I would have been prepared for that. Next time I will have the tools I need to prospect effectively.

Additionally I had a chance to get out and talk to the local prospectors and got some REALLY good information on where to find good chunky gold (that pays dividends).

get a E-Trex 20 GARMIN I found it is a good investment to find the sights ( GPAA ) they don’t make it easy to find, your lucky to find clam sine.

Santa Rita Mountains. I’ve been to the top of Mt Wrightson. Prospectors of America has a claim there? I need to rejoin and check out their other claims with my geology friend.

Idk about the gold but the deer hunting on that road is pretty good.

Not trying to pick on you guys but do you understand the concept of how streams and rivers change course over 1000 years? It’s a little obvious that gold might be in the waterway where everyone already looked in the last 100 years or so? Even the dummies on gold rush know gold is covered in old river channels buried 20-30 feet deep when the river changed course. Good luck.

Enjoyed your video. The things NOT TO DO are what makes the trip interesting. Finding gold would be a bonus.

Hey guys! I just wanted to say hi and thank you for the video. I moved down to this area last fall and have prospected these claims with some pretty good success. I hear ya about kinda getting lost back in there but the road into Kentucky Camp (FR 163) takes you into some nice claims with some pretty good gold. We come in from the north side out of Box Canyon sometimes too. Anyway recognized much of the scenery which was pretty awesome! Thanks again!

Even though only bullets were found looks like you had a nice day to get out and explore, and no skunks or snakes so maybe not so bad after all…LOL…Thanks for posting as it is 10 degrees here in MI with 17" of snow…supposed to go -20 this weekend:(

Sorry about all the bullets, we used to have "shoots" down there. By the way that’s good deer and antelope area, that is where they play. Lucky you didn’t run into smugglers down there, Obama has opened up that area show much it’s kinda iffy getting back. Check out our hunting seasons before coming back as it really can get crowded down there, Enjoy!!!
