Colorado Mining Explored | San Juan Mountains | Ouray, Colorado

Explored the Colorado mining history in the San Juan Mountains near Ouray, Colorado. Spent some time in Ouray and then ventured out to the Silver Cloud, Yankee Girl, Idarado and Chattanooga mines in one day. Great exploration, history, golden aspen trees… and a hidden hot spring! Such a beautiful piece of God’s handywork. My wife and I have been blessed to see the Aspen in September in 2018. Hopefully our trip starting in April will last long enough to see them again this fall. We’re going to head out and kind of go where the road takes us. Planning on spending all our time exploring the west. Thanks for another great video. God bless. 👍🙏👫

I would’ve jumped into the tub as well after hiking around all day. Awesome place thank you.

  5. Our National Adventure on May 16, 2022 at 12:47 am

This was a fun day exploring! Lots to see out in the back country, although I’d never head into the mine shaft 😆 I love the aspen trees up in the mountains. Nice bathtub find! 🛀

  6. potatothorn on May 16, 2022 at 12:47 am

so much good stuff! great views and love the old wooden buildings. no room for us in that tub hahaha thanks for showing us around

  7. Julie Smith on May 16, 2022 at 12:47 am

That looks like a challenging hike with those loose rocks. So beautiful though.

  8. Jonathan Titus on May 16, 2022 at 12:48 am

Kudos once again. I love the Aspens–the way they look and the way they sound in the wind. Love your sense of adventure; not sure I would get in that tub! 🙂 Blessings as always.

Hi Randy, you look so happy in that bathtub. It was the perfect way to end a wonderful and very beautiful day. Like so many States, Colorado is really Awesome. Thank you for another very enjoyable video and God Bless You… Robin 🙂

Love the golden aspens! That’s a great time of year out there. You’re a courageous man sitting in that rusty tub.

  12. A WITNESS UNTO ALL NATIONS on May 16, 2022 at 12:50 am

Great job highlighting the beauty of this area! Enjoyed seeing the bright yellow aspens and awesome drone shots! Informative narration too! 👍

  13. ConcertsAndVinyl on May 16, 2022 at 12:51 am

I think I fell asleep when this originally played on my feed, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the video… but I saw this come up and I watched it of course.. and I really like what you did with this video. Do you like going to sites alone?

  14. Brooke Shaffer on May 16, 2022 at 12:52 am

Glad you are enjoying the West👍 it is great out here.

Hello America’s Park’s😊😊, those San Juan Mountains are SPECTACULAR. Really cool to see that old mine shaft and it did look inviting. I remember my time in Ouray and exploring Cascade Falls. The ride leaving Ouray heading south was absolutely breathtaking, and a little nervous as there were no gaurdrails for most of 550 to Durango and Mesa Verde National Park. You know what Randy, you wouldn’t be all that far from Rainbow Bridge, National Monument😊😊! Great video👍👍! My Florida National Parks trip might be early to mid April.

  17. James House on May 16, 2022 at 12:56 am

Such joy in the San Juan’s!!We love the Ouray area and all it has to offer. Thanks for bringing back the memories and rekindling the desire for another trip up there. Take good care, Randy!

  18. mark akira on May 16, 2022 at 12:59 am

You missed out, there’s a food court just inside that mine with a Chipotle and Panda Express. I’ve noticed the improved, subtle storyline in your recent videos; researched, planned, close- medium-far-overhead shots, in a chronological documentary casual manner. The only thing missing was a rubber duck in the tub. That would’ve been hilarious.

  19. Dawn 1 on May 16, 2022 at 1:00 am

I’m Canadian and love Colorado! Thank you!

  20. Roadtrippin' with Takacs on May 16, 2022 at 1:02 am

High quality narration as usual. Cool hike! Too bad the mine is flooded. Aspens were gorgeous! 👍 Love the San Juans. The kids and I did a bunch of hikes here the past couple of years. We love the Ouray Perimeter Trail and Highland Mary Lakes hikes.

  21. Our National Adventure on May 16, 2022 at 1:06 am

My favorite little town in that area, although it’s a bit north, is ridgeway. That was my #1 pick for settling down in. I love those mountains.

  22. Andy Vawser on May 16, 2022 at 1:06 am

Very interesting video. Loved all the mining history! Interesting that was one of the only uncovered mining shafts you’ve seen. In Idaho there are tons of old abandoned mines that are completely wide open. Near Silver City, Idaho on War Eagle Mountain there are tons of mining tunnels to explore. I’ve been in several and it is both exhilarating and stressful!

  23. Robert L Ward on May 16, 2022 at 1:07 am

You gotta love those solo treks. As much as i enjoy visiting sites with the family/ or a friend, I also enjoy getting out with no distractions and really immerse myself in what im doing. That sure is one stunning area bud. The Hot Spring tub was great! Now that Spring is almost arrived out here, im really itching to get out and see more of whats out there. Looking to head to AZ in a few weeks and do a night fishing clip im excited about w/ a few more AZ stops in April as well. Hope all is well out there in NJ.

  24. Carlos Suarez on May 16, 2022 at 1:07 am

  25. Michael Youngblood on May 16, 2022 at 1:08 am

Very cool video. Great narration and great visuals. What a beautiful area and those Aspens turning colors are just icing on the cake.

Really neat find with the secret bathtub. Spots like that are just awesome. My favorite secret spot is Poet’s Table .

  26. Karl Decker Presents on May 16, 2022 at 1:09 am

Cool brother, now I know exactly what you were up to that day, lol. The history sure runs deep, can’t imagine how hard that work must have been, building and mining. I wish we had more time so we could have droned some of the huge, dilapidated mining structures. Looked to be the only way to safely explore some of them. Maybe if we can get back to that area some point next summer we can do it together. I think this area is my most anticipated up and coming Adventure Zone. . . .

  27. Adventuring Outdoors With Eric on May 16, 2022 at 1:10 am

That mine shaft was pretty cool that you looked into that had the water in it! Your shots of the San Juan mountains were beautiful in this video. All the yellow Aspen Trees were breathtaking! That hot springs bathtub 🛀 was super nice! No jumping into that tub is definitely not the craziest thing I seen you do! You have done a lot crazier lol. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us Randy!

Go see if you can find any gold left in the tailings! Maybe the million dollar highway is called that due to the million dollar views. Incredible. Bath in the woods? Perfect!

  30. Mountain Mine Explorers on May 16, 2022 at 1:15 am

Smart idea not to go inside! I’m a mine explorer here in Colorado and without the right training and gear abandoned mines can quickly become deadly. I’ll check out that mine this summer and make a video on what I find inside!

Randy, Another wonderful video from America’s Parks of the Aspens at their peak in early October. I really think that is the best time of the year to explore this area, and enjoy Ouray Durango, and Silverton. Smart not to go in that mine, but I really enjoyed you sticking the camera in there so we could get a look. I agree, not room for two in that bathtub! THANKS FOR TAKING US ALONG TO COLORFUL COLORADO, . . . Mike

The Silver Cloud mine was a Lead Mine with copper and zinc being secondary could not find a year on it.
Shafts go into the ground where you would need a rope ladder or elevator to enter, adits go into the sides of hills or mountains were you can easily walk in if not blocked.

  35. Khatoon AlSadah on May 16, 2022 at 1:22 am

Finally mining operators in San Juan mountain area formed San Juan district mining as association in 1903 result of western federation of miners to telluride mining association for eight hours day which had been approved in referendum by 72 percent of Colorado voters new association coslidated. Back in the 1980’s my parents were on their way to Mesa Verde via the million dollar highway. They were pulling a camper behind them and the steep grade got the better of them and they slowed to almost a crawl. Eventually they were able to regain some momentum and make itover red mountain pass. I remember my Dad telling me therewas a little extra praying going on that day.

Randy, are you familiar with the Japanese concept of Shinrin-yoku? It translates as Forest bathing; well, you have taken it to a literal level! Those aspen groves were beautiful.

This was amazing! The narration and cinematography was so great! Plus the views in Colorado can’t be beat!

  43. J H on May 16, 2022 at 1:32 am

If you return to Silverton check out the Old Hundred mine. There is a boarding house perched high up on the mountain. We hiked the trail that takes you above the boarding house. We did not attempt the scramble down to it. The trail there is very narrow in places. There are 3 open mine shafts on the way. High clearance 4WD is required to get to the trailhead. It takes almost an hour to Jeep from Silverton to the trailhead. The Silverton visitors center can answer questions and give directions.

Wow, this was so very cool! As someone who loves history, I keep having to add stops along my life’s list of hope-to-see destinations. Thank you for sharing this. You’re living out the lyrics of that old Rich Mullins song "Calling Out His Name."
