Coal Mines

Coal Mines

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, “colliery” generally refers to an underground coal mine.

Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers. – H&T

They make a good case for coal-mining but is coal a never ending source of power ? There may be billions of tons still down there but somehow I cannot see it lasting forever.

using explosives in a coal mine fells backwards, because coal is flammable. but worse than than, is that most coal seems have pockets of methane

There is no doubt that the coal miner job was, is and be a very dangerous work. Every day you risk your life. Myself I worked over 10 years as an hydraulic mechanic in the coal mine in 1000 meter deep mine. The level on my place for work was low between 0,70-1,00 meters. Very hard time but be honest I loved my job.

There is no way I will ever ride some cart 7 miles to go to work inside a mountain. Forget it. I get nauseous just thinking about it. Ugh! One hour commute each way. I am so glad I don’t have to do that. Whew! That is my idea of one of the worst things I could experience.

I spent 14 years underground, from the age of 16, and although i had 2 fingers ripped off by a machine, I never thought of it as dangerous, now, 31 years later, I look back and realise just how dangerous it was. Stay safe miners.

Coal power stations are being replaced by Biomass power stations.
Biomass power stations burn trees, because trees are renewable. Yay???
Biomass is 100% ok with all of our environmental elites.

Normal environmentalists say, WTF Al Gore???
Coal bad, but kill trees ok ???

    Negative truths.

The prosperity and comfort of most modern nations has coal miners to thank.
North America’s first railroad and first commercial coal mines are just a short walk from my mailbox (have found old mining equipment scraps on my land) and were used to power the industry of the 13 colonies, provide coke for manufacturing of weapons and flint/gunpowder for the Revolutionary War, were the primary source of coal & coke for the Confederacy during the Civil War, and for many decades heated the homes of the north east.
Hundreds lost their lives in numerous explosions and accidents, their dangerous & burdensome work powered the industry that enabled the birth the United States.

Little did they know that the Obama administration would start shutting coal power plants down left and right. Now all they talk about is bullshit “green energy”. It’s expensive and not worth a shit. History channel would not even be allowed to show this today.
