Centralia Burning Ghost Town – Pennsylvania USA
Centralia Burning Ghost Town – Pennsylvania USA
Centralia, Pennsylvania was nearly entirely evacuated following a coal mine fire, burning beneath the town since 1962.
Centralia’s fire started in 1962, when residents turned an old strip mine into a dump, and setting the rubbish alight. The fire spread through an unsealed opening to the underground coal mines, igniting a seam of coal, and the fire has been burning to this day.
In 1992, Pennsylvania condemned the town and claimed it under eminent domain in an attempt for force the remaining residents out. Some sued, and were allowed to stay.
A section of State Route 61 was abandoned after it began to buckle and crumble from the underground fire.
The fire stretches 12km, and burns underneath an area of 15 square kilometres, 300 feet below ground, authorities say the fire could burn for another 250 years.
The town now mostly attracts tourists who visit an abandoned highway, where many profanities and obscene pictures are spray painted onto it, over time the highway has earned the nickname Graffiti Highway.
Centralia is rumored to have inspired Silent Hill.
Thanks for watching

Even in abandoned towns in the middle of nowhere, punk kids tag every exposed surface with their ridiculous initials, gang logos and drawings, inane mottos, and obscene comments! What makes it so stupid is that there are so many that individual graffiti is lost in the morass of similar vandalism.
Global warming tho
Why would anyone want to live here? What about jobs? Groceries?
Regarding 3:40. It must be your accent. Because I clearly hear 2019. Whatever.
★★★ *FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO / FACT UPDATES* ★★★
*1) At **3:40**, he says “March, 2019”?* – For some reason people are hearing me say 2019 at 3:40, I listened to the video, and I clearly hear 2018, which is what I said.
*2) Where did all the houses go?* – I have not researched this answer, it is just a guess, but I would assume either the government relocated the houses to new plots of lands in another town, or once people moved out the government demolished the houses, so homeless people could not live in them.
*3) The cheerful jingling music doesn’t really fit the video* – Yes I know, but I made this video when I was using that music a lot, as I own the licence to it and it was kind of my theme music, but I started using more appropriate music for the topic as time went by.
But doesnt it keep spreading to neighboring towns/ counties at some point….is there a team of researchers and/or analysts/ fire experts that are monitoring it.
The remaining residents are hard core addicted to the fumes that’s why they fought so hard to stay.
There’s a fire like this here in Australia too, though it’s natural in origin and is situated far from any settlement. It’s called "Burning Mountain" if I recall correctly.
I always wondered why they didn’t divert all and any streams/rivers down into those mines and put the fire out?
Pump a large stream of water into cracks where smoke rises idiots
The Walking Dead!
Looks like a good place to drill and install geothermal.
Such upbeat music for a video about a town that caught fire 😅😂
Tap into it for power…
And Starbucks won’t let me have a plastic straw?
I lived in Maryland and wanted to visit there but never got around to it .
3:06 it’s not Hiroshima, that’s Chernobyl
Might be a good place to metal detect.
Yes that county should be carbon taxed.
Staying is the American way!
S.H 🧟♂️🧟♀️🧟
my family immigrated to centralia from ireland as a lot of people did. some of my family were still living there but they are very old so I’m not sure how many are left alive. i visited once and it wasn’t bad. just very quiet.
Thanks.
Why do you say "more than 56 years ago" instead of saying the year it started (1962)? Kinda makes your video dated since I’m watching it now, 3 years after you posted it.
Basically the world 5 years after nfts were created
An extreme example of what man can do to the environment. Shame.
Do they run electricity to those few people?
Tell me this, why is the thumbnail 1983 when it was over 59 years ago that this happened
The problem is, none of the remaining residents have to “live with” any of the dangers you mention in the last line. Because none of those things has been a threat to them for a long, long time.
And one day that area will be completely underwater.
2:40 send noodles
Only 1000 people?! My school has five thousand lmao
it’s like 10 mins away from me lmao
Crazy that the government took the houses through imminent domain. Remains me how much I hate the fucking government
was here today not much to see pretty boring.
Oi oi oi hello mate , I lived it in the 80’s it was a great place if locals left you hang out there , the first movie was in 1987,Made in the USA on u tube . I inspired a saying of mount Carmel , halfway running down oak st they steal pizza from electrical guys can you guess what I said ? Lol watch it you will hear them say . But very true was my saying . Shame it’s gone now but not forgotten .
There is no reason theh couldn’t extinguish the firer. By getting ahead of it..theres is no reason it couldnt.. they why aren’t the climate crying crowd and the environmentalist not trying to put it out of they cared so much. All these billion an millionaires who want to force everyone else to stop emissions. Not banding together to get the funds to extinguish it. Saving the environment..hypocrites thats why..spend the billion on putting it out. Im sure the rest of the country would stand with them if this was thebcase.. but no they want to tax you the poor thing for breathing out carbon monoxide and shut down dairy farms because there cows are farting. Bit not investing in putting out a coal mine fire that’s been burning for decades. That could’ve been nout by now saving not just rhe environment but bullion if dollar worth of good coal..
I’m from Pottsville and used Togo there to see if we could see buildings collapse
And greek fire re-discovered.
Imagine moving your cattle over this area without knowing this. Next thing, you just temporarily opened a B-B-Q House in Centrailia!
A town abandoned by its human residents is a wild animal’s paradise.
There’s an area by the cemetery that still smokes. When I visit my parents in a nearby town, we go and see if it’s still smoking. The snow doesn’t stay in certain parts because of the heat coming up from the ground.
I remember being a kid and my father and my siblings used to visit all the time because I loved the graffiti it was just kinda nostalgic for some reason
The music was a little annoying, but very good presentation. It’s a thumbs up from me.
People should have the right to stay there if they want to stay there that’s their life
Gosh… imagine the levels of pollution here
Silent hill ahh town
I bet they pay no taxes , that’s one reason that they stay !!
I’m wondering how those five people shop. Keep gas in their car. Go places?
I would definitely live. There
