Before and after tar sands strip mining on Colorado Plateau
Major construction begins at the second U.S Oil Sands’ tar sands strip mine. As many as 200 acres could be clearcut in this site. The company has paid their 2.2 million dollar bond to the Utah Division of Oil and Gas Mining (DOGM) and their operation has begun full force.

I know this area, a place filled with beautiful plants that have adapted to and survived centuries of the arid high dessert and animals that thrive in and around PR Springs. Over the past 3 years, since the announcement of this strip mining project, we have watch families of animals frequent the area. Turkeys with broods of 10-12 chicks, deer and fawns in herds, birds of many varieties, ground squirrels, chip monks and bear… Seeing this video breaks my heart! Why do we give corporations the right (and even encouragement) to TOTALLY destroy these diverse habitats of the Tavaputs Plateau? Pleaser help stop this mass destruction which once done can never be reversed!
I bet after 5 years now it has grass, trees and animals all over that area. More like Peaceful Usurping instead of Peaceful Uprising. Go back, shoot some video, take some photos and if it looks the same, sue and the courts will force them to Terra-Form the Area to it’s original state.
After the devastation of Mt.Saint Hellenes, this is to show flora regrowth.

in Canada we have open pit and insitu oil extraction… but the industry is regulated to remove the topsoil, then when the work is done, they must replace the topsoil and replant vegetation… many old mines are now lakes, marshland and forests and they look beautiful and support a wide variety of fish and game… that makes sense to me! Responsible industry means jobs and tax revenue and economic prosperity.
Dust bowl comes to mind.
Beautiful and cheap land.
