Ask Adam Savage: About MythBusters' Narrator

Tested member Kyle Bennette asked a question on behalf of many of you, which was: “Did you ever get to meet or interact with the narrator of the show? His voice was iconic alongside the Mythbusters crew.” Here’s what Adam has to say about his friend and colleague Rob Lee (as well as what it’s like to lose an Emmy repeatedly). Awards are dumb but mythbusters deserved a few

  2. Gojiro7 on March 21, 2021 at 6:43 am

nobody liked that folk lore lady, everyone I knew who watched the show felt she looked smug and condescending on camera.

  3. Aleera on March 21, 2021 at 6:46 am

as a brit, I can confirm the UK episodes were all an hour long. But the US narrator was always super weird to me because they’d air them on occasion. His delivery always felt super weird and overly forced. But I’m sure it feels the way for the opposite too.

  4. Michael Carey on March 21, 2021 at 6:46 am

I do recall that there was a free-to-air TV station in Australia that aired the version of Mythbusters without Rob doing the narration.

  5. reptiletc on March 21, 2021 at 6:48 am

Here’s a clip with the other narrator: https://youtu.be/73FFitene58

Just so you know. In my heart you have got that award. You guys are and were awesome

  7. Dan France on March 21, 2021 at 6:51 am

From the UK- I am rewatching mythbusters atm and can’t remember the narration to be different really, I think the discovery channel must have played the US versions, I feel lucky.

  8. Darren Graham on March 21, 2021 at 6:52 am

The UK narrator is way better than the US one!

  9. Charles Laine on March 21, 2021 at 6:56 am

How the hell did MythBusters not win an Emmy? Are you serious? That is a travesty.

  10. RustyDog41 on March 21, 2021 at 6:56 am

What is the best way to watch Mythbusters today?

  11. Ankrow on March 21, 2021 at 6:56 am

I loved the narrator. He was as much a personality of the show as any of the main cast

  12. HappyTrails 1 on March 21, 2021 at 6:56 am

    8:31 This made me laugh

  13. JoseKilen on March 21, 2021 at 6:58 am

In Denmark we had both Rob and the British narrator. It depended on the episode.

  14. pokemastercube on March 21, 2021 at 7:02 am

yea here in the UK we had a different narrator who was called robin banks (he was the same regardless of channel, see next bit). as for episode length it depended on the channel that showed it. on discovery (and connected channels), quest and DMAX the episodes were 42-43 min long (before adverts to fill in an hour) but a few of teh early seasons were also sown on the BBC who aired them at 28 min length (to fit into the half hour slot)

  15. funnybus3rd on March 21, 2021 at 7:03 am

    what kind of syrup?

  17. David Wheater on March 21, 2021 at 7:10 am

Hi Adam, there was a half hour version of Mythbusters in the UK, it was shown on the BBC, so no adverts. It didn’t last long, I don’t know who narrated this version.
We did get the "Hour" long version on the Discovery Channel, but again it was a different narrator to the US: Robin Banks.

  18. markschilke on March 21, 2021 at 7:14 am

    Maybe sardonic rather than laconic?

  19. SubzeroX0143 on March 21, 2021 at 7:16 am

Who else looks back to the episode that he talks about

  20. L33tSkE3t on March 21, 2021 at 7:16 am

I’ve seen a UK episode of Mythbusters, I had to turn it off.

  21. Rusty Shackleford on March 21, 2021 at 7:17 am

I’m sure the episodes of alternate narration voices exist on a torrent somewhere. But I do have one question: If such torrent exists and Adam uses it to download his own show, is that piracy?

Nintendo did this to their wii VC release of SMB. The person who ripped the rom added a signature to the file to know it was his when people downloaded it. Nintendo apparently didnt have a copy or they were too lazy to grab from the archive, so they dowoaded a copy before shutting down the rom site.

It turns out that it IS piracy (for Nintendo) because the rom they obtained was not an original. It was also illegal for the party handling the distribution because they lack the rights to do so.

I doubt the DVDs are still in production and no doubt have inflated prices (thanks Amazon. Next, I’ll sell you a middle finger). So I’d hardly call that an option.

Better off looking at the bottom of San Francisco (argh!) Bay for a buried treasure like Mythbusters.

  22. Hyraethian Rabbit on March 21, 2021 at 7:18 am

I can still hear that voice despite decades since last hearing it proper.

  23. NetworKing on March 21, 2021 at 7:18 am

Don’t even remember that pun joke, still don’t make sense to me…

  24. Beau-Urns on March 21, 2021 at 7:19 am

Just remember Adam: DON’T ever stop going way off the rails with your responses. That is where the gold truly is

  25. Arwen Grune on March 21, 2021 at 7:19 am

    About the UK narrator:
Humor doesn’t travel. Having Adam and Jamie do their puns and jokes was fine to listen to because you had them and the actual situation and location to look at but a voice over doesn’t have those "handholds" and, to non-Americans, American puns can be much closer to real cringe than they are (probably) meant to be.
Secondly, in the show, values, measurements, figures, volumes, etc would be mentioned, like a lot. ALL of those were imperial, not metric. And the UK and the rest of Europe are metric. So one of the most important jobs of the UK narrator is to repeat the figures in imperial. And what are you going to do? Have two narrators? Put in cue card, next to MB’s own clue card?

The UK narration was really good, just the right humor for the audience and all figures were metric. (And BTW the shows were full length)

As a fellow Attention Defecit person I envy you so much Adam, and your ability to tell stories in such a lovely way and share your memories with us!! I am SO bad at telling stories that I usually just keep mine to myself, lol.

  28. Phantom Aspect on March 21, 2021 at 7:23 am

I seem to remember hearing an Australian accent narrator growing up as a kid in Australia watching Mythbusters on SBS, I could be wrong though it might have been the UK narrator

  29. nojerama on March 21, 2021 at 7:25 am

The British episodes, from what I remember, were about 45 minutes but we definitely had a different narrator, idk who but I remember watching the show on netflix way after it ended and I was like "thiiiiiiis is a different voice to what I remember"

  30. Ben Hermer on March 21, 2021 at 7:25 am

I watched the UK version 1st, then watched the US ones on netflix later, I agree, the US voice over was better

  31. Maggie McFee on March 21, 2021 at 7:26 am

Well, now. Speaking of puns… that’s a mighty sharp mill you got there. 😉

  32. Amanda Jones on March 21, 2021 at 7:26 am

MYTH: you can’t make those puns sound good.

    BUSTED

  33. Sparks N Zeros on March 21, 2021 at 7:28 am

the funny thing is i never heard the USA narrator growing up and watching the show, it was only when searching for clips online in recent years that i heard the USA narrator and immediately thought ‘eurghh’. I guess it depends on what you’re used to.

  34. Alex Pawlowski on March 21, 2021 at 7:28 am

    "’pouring syrup all over me"

. . . and I’m pretty sure Adam actually knows what that feels like.

I hated the UK version of mythbusters, the narration sucked

  37. Alex Mint on March 21, 2021 at 7:31 am

I don’t really see why gold painting would be considered such a big deal when people who wear rubber regularly do so in excess of six hours in thicknesses that are far more water/airtight and covering.

  38. Cole Mines on March 21, 2021 at 7:32 am

Im from the UK and grew up on mythbusters, always remember the british narrator and had to look up the american version before i could remember it. Always thought something was different with the youtube clips and could never put my finger on it haha

  39. Daniel Kays on March 21, 2021 at 7:32 am

@Adam Savage’s Tested – the Emmy, while they are prestigious awards, are not a true measure of the love that your fans feel for you. A better measure is the 5.44 million subscribers on YouTube. My son came over every free moment for a few weeks and took over my shop to build his Adam Savage style tool storage uhh, thingy. We all love to see the things you build, but he especially wants to see how you build it. He loves to make things and thinks you are the ultimate maker. I also want to say, most of your fans wouldn’t even know if you did win an Emmy. You continually delight and amaze us. If I could choose between a trophy or 5.44 million YouTube subscribers I’ll take the latterv7 days a week.

As Adam was talking, I could hear Mr. Rob Lee’s voice as if he were right next to me. Fascinating how memories work. X-D

  42. slowfuse on March 21, 2021 at 7:35 am

spent weeks torrenting the entire mythbusters catalogue and it was the british version. completely unwatchable. deleted instantly

  43. Brian Amundsen Barnkow on March 21, 2021 at 7:38 am

Is the color balance shifting as Adam moves, or am I going crazy?

  44. engineeredlifeform on March 21, 2021 at 7:38 am

Brit and long time fan of the show here, and yes, we had our own British narrator, which I found a little odd, until I caught some clips via the Discovery channel web site, and heard the original, who I actually prefer. I might just binge watch the entire series again, it’s been a while : -)

(Yes, I was a fan of the show.)

So my life has been a lye that because I’m in the UK I miss parts of the show…….

  48. Sergeant on March 21, 2021 at 7:40 am

Adam. Mythbusters didn’t need an Emmy, etc to prop it up. You and everyone associated with Mythbusters are far beyond these industry handouts. Be happy with the quiet achievers award. It’s sooooooo much more meaningful

  49. Elliot Sime on March 21, 2021 at 7:41 am

Coming from the UK, I remember visiting the US years ago and watching Mythbusters – Back then I didn’t know the narrators were different (at the time I assumed that the "old" (UK) narrator had been replaced in the new season I was watching in the US) but the most jarring difference was the overall tone of the show. The UK (Discovery, not BBC2) version I would describe as documentary-adjacent; While there * was * an occasional joke or tongue-in-cheek remark by the narrator, they were few & far between. There was just less narration in general, with Adam, Jamie or another member performing the majority of the explaining & the narrator filling in any gaps or providing context. The US version in contrast, as I remember it, had much more narration, with far more puns/jokes sprinkled throughout and came across far less heavy(?) I’d place it closer to the feel of the show "Braniac". I remember the narrator re-iterated/re-explained what was occurring quite regularly, which in my opinion (when accompanied by the overall less serious tone) came across as little patronising when compared to the UK version. Both narrators did a great job though, and I think that for many people who grew up watching the show, seeing the "other" version would be similarly jarring.

  50. James Bartholomew on March 21, 2021 at 7:41 am

As someone from the UK that grew up watching Mythbusters… while we had a different narrator, for me he was equally as Iconic and important to the experience of the show as I expect Rob Lee was to US viewers. It was just the sound of Mythbusters for us!
