Arizona's Copper Mines | Development in the Desert

Mining jobs in Arizona are on the decline, but several proposed mines might give the industry a needed boost, if they can win over residents and get out of the permitting process. (Video by Kaly Nasiff/Cronkite News)

Wow, I would expect way more from a Cronkite News journalist. Let’s talk about all the things wrong with this 2-minute hit piece.

First, let’s talk about those interviewed? You jumped to residents in the town that have been given false information by those opposed to this in-situ extraction installation. They claim to be worried about the water. Its funny if you would have done your research you would have realized that the Sulfuric Acid they are putting in the ground at 99.5% Water and .5% Sulfuric acid is the same Acid is being dumped on all the local farms by the "thousands of gallons" at 80%+ Purity. Yet not a single Florence area resident in the last 100 years has ever protested it.. Heck, they are out playing golf as the local Crop Duster sprays Monsanto Products into the air and they don’t protest this either.

Where is the science? Why didn’t you find someone with a geology/chemical degree to put some scientific light on the subject? Maybe you did and realized that when the .5% of sulfuric acid mixes with the Caliche clay and rock, it goes inert. Again why Famers use it by the thousands of gallons.

You talk about the PH balance, and yet you don’t make clear that it is a fact it has about the Same PH balance as household vinegar, you instead just jumped to the opinion of a Resident rather than fact… Do you think that’s good Journalism? Do you think this is an Honest Story?

Where is an interview from the THOUSANDS of Florence Residents that are for the Florence Copper Project and the Billions of dollars it will create in local wealth and Jobs?

Kaly Nasiff reached out to me on March 30th via a facebook message that went into the spam box. I did get back to her on April 2nd and told her I would come to her for an interview and her exact response was "Thanks for responding David. I think I have all the sources I need for now, but if I end up needing more, I’ll be sure to reach out".

This whole subject is not about the environment, it’s political, and that is proven by those opposed never going out and protesting farmers dumping thousands of gallons of sulfuric acid on the dirt next to their homes and houses. and they, nor the Town of Florence have ever lifted a finger or cared.

Let’s talk about the Town of Florence that has given its blessing to another local mining company that plans a 4500-acre tailing pile that is the micro fine dust with some very harsh chemicals including Mercury that whenever we get a monsoon dust storm, everyone will be breathing. Still sound like they care about the environmental impacts and the effects it will have on the children and residents. Ya me neither.. Sounds more Political to me.

Please go back to the Cronkite school and take the class on getting both sides of the story. Please go out and get an expert or two on the subject matter and then at least interview one person who is knowledgeable on the subject for the "On the side of Growth" and on the side of "continuing this revolutionary earth friendly way to extract copper from our environment."

Was this video/news story done as a Cronkite School Project? If so I give it a D- I see no commitment to the Truth… Dug Deep into this story? I think you were digging with a fork and this looks like a students first-time school project at best.
