Angry Planet – 311 – Crystal Cave

In 2000, a remarkable find was made in Chihuahua, Mexico, of a spectacular cave filled with giant crystals, some over 12 meters long. But it is a intensely difficult spot to explore – with temperatures over 50 degrees C and humidity approaching 100%. George leads an Explorers Club Flag Expedition into the cave, wearing special refrigerated suits and respirators to battle the extreme environment.

The conditions inside the mountain are crazy, I love how we used our technology to adapt & satisfy curiosity, would love to experience that cave. The high humidity levels makes the heat feel even more.

  16. Rich Tygart on February 13, 2021 at 3:00 pm

41 degrees with 55% humidity? I lived in Thailand for 16 years. I’ve been walking in the jungle at 46 degrees and 96% humidity. That is torture.

The crystal cave on South Bass Island Ohio also features Selenite crystals colored an odd shade of green while the cave is not all that large it is the largest known Geode in the U.S.

What’s interesting is that Jules Verne perfectly predicted this in his book Journey to the Center of the Earth in the 1800s. The first time I ever saw pictures of this cave in Mexico the first thing I thought of was the movie for Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was exactly like this. Jules Verne would be proud of himself.

The only way you could improve conditions would be to drill a few boreholes down the main cavern for air circulation, pump fresh cold air down a few and create a draft in the others to draw the hot moist air out.

  34. Curtis on February 13, 2021 at 3:23 pm

Wow….. just straight up destroying the Crystal’s by walking on them….. wtf is wrong with people.
