In 1974, my wife and I were just outside of the Greenbriar entrance to the park. The river had run hard with spring rains and had settled down. Our swimming hole, the FlintRock, was closed off for the day. Divers were in the water, sucking sand from around the large rocks and the FlintRock. They had a mechanical suicebox set up and was processing the material. At the end of the day, the owner of the little white house there, recieved a cloth bag, heavy and reportedly all gold. 20% of what they found for letting them setup on his land..They came back every spring for years. Gold being washed out of the park…There was a old Gatlinburg Detective who told me tales of old Gold camps deep in Greenbrier above where the tourist are allowed to go. Every so often he would have to go retrieve a tourist who got lost… IT IS ILLEGAL TO HUNT FOR GOLD IN THE PARK. Why did Roosevelt add Greenbrier to the National Park…to protect assets.
