#119 Awesome mines in Jackson's bowl!

We travel up to some remote mines, find some great back country cabins and fly over some awesome scenery.
The Jackson claims lie just northeast of the Slocan silver camp which is centered near the town of
Sandon, 7 km to the southwest (Cairnes, 1934; Hedley, 1952). Veins of the Slocan Camp were
discovered in the early 1890s. Since then, production has come from more than 100 mines,
commonly owned and operated by a number of separate companies or individuals. During the peak
of production, continuing through to the early 1900s, the town of Sandon became a major mining
and business center with a population of over 2,000. In total, more than 1,329,231 tonnes of ore
have been processed in the Slocan camp, with recovery of 885,028 kg of silver, 171,131 grams of
gold, 118,598,884 kilograms of lead and 61,702,785 kilograms of zinc.

I like your videos, it is pleasure to watch 🙂 side note: I always wonder how the people can destroy beautiful land trying to get the "treasure" from it while mining it. Just to get money, be rich. And then they did NOT even realize that the biggest treasure was the land they destroyed. You have such a huge privilge to live in country like this in the video, I hope future poeple will keep it and appreciate it. This country realy deserves it! 🙂

Tonite, Fearless Frank walks the plank, & lives to tell about it! One of the few times I’ve heard u actually call a mine dangerous, as opposed to hinky, sketchy, or some other not-quite-that-bad descriptor, so it must’ve really been a baddie. Beautiful country, cozy little cabin, pretty darned hospitable of yr predecessor to leave u that Bud, too. Cheers!

as a kid growing up in Northern Arizona we used to go check out the ghost towns most of which were mining communities that when the ore ran out or the price dropped the mines closed. Back in the 1960s you could still walk into the old Indian cliff dwellings and ruins and I mean the famous one like in Canyon de Chelly . If you were local, ranchers would let you ride their property in search of things. I’ve found an old miner’s camp on a small stream that eventually wound up in the Salt River Canyon and I’m talking the guy with the burro type gear with sluice boxes and hand shakers rather than bedrock mines. I’ve been in the mine shafts as well although pretty carefully as we used some really basic things to detect bad air – – didn’t have hand held "sniffers". What I like about your videos is the honesty – – if you don’t know something you damn well say so and offer an educated guess unlike some who make these vids and are completely clueless yet state things I know to be false trying to come off as experts. You try to see what once was and don’t try to artificially enhance what you’re showing because its fascinating just to see what they left behind and the scope of their operations. I’ll be turning 69 here pretty quick and both knees won’t be OEM equipment much longer so my adventures are a bit restricted from what they once were but so long as I can I’ll be humpin the bush in search of who knows what. Love the drones gees – – you can get an overview in an hour I couldn’t on horseback in a whole day of riding never mind accessing areas that would be out of reach. And ya while javelina hunting around the Superstition Mountains I may have kept an eye out for the Peralta’s more famously referred to as the Lost Dutchman – – keep it going Frank as long as you can. Those vistas around Anyox were breath taking – – I like those off the beaten path areas

I didn’t even know this was a thing, until I saw one of your videos a few days ago. You’re a beast, man. You can keep a Florida beach bum on edge, while you tour guide around in these awesome places. Keep it up man, I cant wait for some more.

    Where is Jackson’s Bowl?

  30. JB Robertson on November 1, 2021 at 12:47 am

Another good one Frank thank-you. I got a question for you, Do you believe in the paranormal? Why I’m asking is because at 12:49ish when you shine your flashlight up into the upper level it looks like a shadow figure runs from right to left or it’s just the reflection from the water it’s so quick it’s hard to tell. Well thanks again. Cheers

  31. Loyal Kuhn on November 1, 2021 at 12:47 am

Beautiful country with awesome views. Kind of reminds ya of how puny mankind is and how majestic the creations of a higher power can be. Really enjoyed the last mine and the cabins would be well worth a visit. Thank you again Frank for a great video !!!

no pocket geologist in tow … no blue / uv light in the pocket … and no underwater light [a T10 sealed in silicone / transparent shrink tube on a 3m 28awg cable run off a 9v battery … for example ..] …. my oh my … the things you’re missing / missing out on on your treks into the mountains …

It must have been lots of work and 💰 to build the railroad into the mines. And all the wood, heavy equipment it must have been a real big production. How many workers would be hired for one of the big mines with train, big tall pulleys.

  35. Durp Von Fronz on November 1, 2021 at 12:51 am

Hey Frank, ever heard of a vehicle called a Sherp. Western Canada now has a dealer for them too. Check em out as they are in a league of their own.

  36. JohnnyD RC on November 1, 2021 at 12:51 am

You live in the neatest place, what a mine.

  37. GoldenNorway1 on November 1, 2021 at 12:52 am

I’ve been to more mines than I can count myself, as mining was a big thing in Norway until the 1970s. It’s really fun to see how different mining operations was done around the World, and your videos are some of the best. You’re optimistic, interested and fun to watch. You do also know alot of its history, and the drone camera is a really good idea.
It’s also interesting as the geology in BC is more or less the same you find in Norway, although it’s on the other side of the globe. It’s a big contrast to the mines in California and the classic "desert mines".

I’m only in my mid twenties, but mining history has always been a great interest of mine. -Especially since I now operate an artisanal mine myself, where we still are using the same timbering technuiqes to this date. It works, so why not?

    Keep it up!
