Cerillos (Cerro Chalchiquite) down this way may be one of the oldest Turquoise mines, even according to vanilla archaeology, and certainly Hachita, the Burros, and other locations throughout the southwest were all mined way back into antiquity. There are a lot of Mesoamerican petroglyphs in the southern part of the state, from geometric designs, to lots of Tlaloc figures, monkeys, parrots, and other clear signs of old contact. Examples on my site.

That’s native land and turquoise is sacred to the people anything made from that stone should only be purchased from our first Nations peoples that are the experts in working with it no one other than ordained elders and those chosen under them should be permitted near those mines or in them the sacred ground is being desecrated I’m surprised tribes have nothing to say about this so far they have a bad habit of staying quiet! Shame on you Rex, you usually are far more informed very well informed generally speaking about places that you are going through or if you are at and I think more respectful in these kind of cases and you’ve been to many sacred sites…. I would ask that you talk to the native people directly and won’t you please ask them to honestly tell you how they feel and how a traditional stone like turquoise, especially in this land is directly connected and synonymous with tribes of our first Nations people…. As with any such traditional art or things created traditionally by our native sisters and brothers should respectfully only be purchased and sought after directly from them and from our native sisters and brothers alone- only. That’s the appropriate way, only they know of the proper use and how to wear them can also be conveyed, and not distorted. In many situations sacred items ,when they are sold as tourist trinkets ,they bring bad energy. Only our native sisters and brothers will be able to show and tell the proper and respectful ways of handling treating and wearing such items and as we all know all things are sacred to our first Nations peoples….. I know you have some contacts with some of the tribal leaders as you have said and I would hope and I’d ask that you would go and seek counsel with them and I have to say even before these conversations I would hope that in the end you would advocate traditional items only he purchased and acquired through our native sisters and brothers only-no one else should ever profit from these things. .
