Finding Garnets in California

A day digging at one of our favorite garnet locations in southern California. We hit a couple nice zones in the mica schist producing many beautiful almandine garnets

Do you guys know any places near Sacramento? I’m from N.C. and know a lot of great spots there, but out here my main problem is not being able to go far from Sacramento. Anywhere you’d recommend?

Nice digging. Most of what you showed was too cracked and crazed to be of gem quality. Hope I’m wrong

    Where in cali ??

  28. Kimberly on December 16, 2021 at 11:18 pm

Looks like a serpentine schist matrix, or at least some kind of a schist, which means these garnets are being found along fault zones. Looks like really sandy soil, too. Is that red sandstone? Dang it’s too hard to see. There’s the occasional flash of some platy minerals in that red sandstone

here is a dumb qu to ask. what type of rocky area that holds them. or do you look for x type of mound of rocks in an area?

  31. Jo Lind on December 16, 2021 at 11:22 pm

What is the point of this video? No talking, no info and no tips or tricks to help in searching for the stones. Only saw people digging and showing off what they could get. Over 8 minutes of you showing what you got. Shows you there are still only two classes "the needy and the greedy" Nothing magic about that.

I live in socal and am extremely curious where to find stuff like this. Ive been taking my kids gold prospecting with some luck, but i think crystals would be better for kids. Great find, and thanks for posting!

  36. SoCal Rockhound on December 16, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Awesome finds! I’ve gone up looking for these in zones bearing a lot of granite pegmatite and mica schist in the SGV mountains, still no luck tho. The hunt continues!

Where are the best place to find these crystals?

  43. Hal on December 16, 2021 at 11:33 pm

Yo man! I know rockhounds even go to the efforts of burring digs but im 17 and just starting out! Just got back from splitting limestone for diplos, myos, and other ANCIENT fish! Approximately 50mil years old.. i also cracked rock and hunted for trilobites in utah! So this stuff peaks my interest man! I went with my grandpa to hunt for hemotite with garnet in the marble mountains of the Mojave desert i believe in the south east basin. We also hunted for trilobites there! But it lacked the volume of trilobites i found two days ago in utah! Usually just negatives:( but hey man if you could hint to me what that layer is near id really appreciate it!! I wouldnt disclose it to much other than my grandpa to be completely honest with you.

  46. Apolinar Maxilom on December 16, 2021 at 11:36 pm

    Awesome garnets…
Found smaller river worn garnets while gold prospecting. Your garnets come from higher up on the hill sides. What other indicators do you look for?
