Yay!!! My cousin works for this company!!! Great video and info. I love being able to see the mine.
Wow, I was excited to see and hear about the machinery. I was an engineer with US Steel many years ago and can appreciate the scale of the operation. Excellent tour and commentary keep up the good work ๐
Awesome tour-I love this stuff (Bob aka Harry Hair Shirt). Spent 33 years in Industrial ops and maintenance. Thanks for the vid. BNG
Lol! What happened at the end?!?
Now that’s a open pit surface mine right there.
I live in Sandy, UT and see this mine every day across the valley while I’m on my way to work.
the machines are like little working beatles from the distance
Too bad the visitor center isn’t there anymore! Half the Mountain slid into the mine about 4 years ago it was a big thing on the news here in Salt Lake.
This is amazing I love copper and mines and seeing how large this place is it’s so cool
Great video. I remember going by the Bucyrus Erie plant in Erie PA. when I was young. I use to thing it was a neet place because they had a big yard where they got to play with all the new toys as the came off the assembly line before shipping them to the customers. Or just because they could.
Very educational I live in Arizona and driving by the copper mines all my life and never knew exactly what was going on thanks for sharing. ๐๐๐
Wholesome content. Thanks for sharing.
Great overview. We saw a similar mine up in Montana about 20 years ago. We may have to check this one out this fall.
My husband would enjoy seeing this too, I’m sure. He also worked for a mining company once upon a time. ๐
Very cool tour of this mine
I went to see "Big Brutus" in West Mineral, Kansas and was overwhelmed by its size. You must go if you haven’t already.
Mark,
The small rusty loader on rails you were talking about it still made and used in underground mines around the world. It runs on air and I helped rebuild one in the ’70’s that was going to South America. I also rebuilt an electric "locomotive" that was used to pull strings of the small ore cars that the loader loaded.
jack
I was somewhat distracted by your video reflexion in Mark sunglasses 3:24/8:39/. [smile]. That was fun and informative…love the sound effects. Thanks!
You will always be a geeky engineer!
How many million tonnes of rock were excavated during history of bingham canyon mine?
I had read an article about Kennecott Copper mine and wanted to look up video of it and I stumbled across this video. Did you say you got your start at Bucyrus Erie? In Erie, Pa? I am from Erie, Pa. I was a kid when Bucyrus closed, I think it was the 80’s.. It was like the first in a long line of manufacturing plants to shut down here. The building itself reopened and it is now PSB. I’m a welder, I’ve been in there a few times, most recently, last January to take a pipe welding test. Are you originally from Erie, Pa? Huge coincidence that I clicked on this video.
Very informative! Thank you.
We definitely want to see this mine… thanks for sharing… looks so interesting!!
Oh hey welcome to SLC!
Mark, there is an old abandoned Kennecott Copper mine in south east Alaska outside of McCarthy. I believe it was abandoned around in the 1920s and a lot of it is still there. Now if you and Sue were to drive up there and record the adventure, I for one would enjoy watching those videos. Yours and Sues’ take on the adventure and views of what is going on around you is spot on. I truly enjoy your videos and your sense of humor is outstanding. Rock on and stay safe
Wow!!!๐ฒ
Very cool!
you know what’s so nice about being an old old guy? you get to watch all your videos over and over and each time it’s like the first time you’ve ever seen them. I really do enjoy your videos, they are so refreshing and I can feel the love, thanks guys, love you
My dad works for this company! Great video, Iโve been in it
Welcome to Utah! We live in the Salt Lake area, and are your newest friends. Be sure you check out the awesome views and scenic drives we are famous for. Looking forward to getting to know you.
Pretty impressive mine and machinery. Bet it was even more impressive in person. Canโt believe that one tire cost over $30K. ๐๐
The Crusher output goes by conveyer to the Transfer Station west of Copperton Utah from there it goes to another conveyor up to the Concentrator north of Copperton, Utah!
@ present work on crusher relocation to the top of the filled up former Bingham Canyon is ongoing!
what happens if you go to the bottom of the mine
Thanks for sharing, that was awesome ๐๐ผ๐๐๐
Impresive mine! Great tour! thanks
Our average load is around 378 tons. The road you can see trucks driving up by the shovel is called OCut ramp thatโs usually going out to the SEW/AR dumps the main road going to the crusher is called the 10% because that road is a 10%grade The road that goes up along the shop is called code 80 haul road. And that goes out to the BC dumps aka Bingham Canyon dump. Right now weโre currently working on relocating the crusher up by where the shop in all the buildings are a lot has definitely changed and most of the shovels in the upper pit are now at the crusher lvl. Nice video! Our longest run we currently have from the very bottom all the way to the outside BC dumps is 42 minutes one-way.
VERR NIICE!!
Your video had a lot of Knowledge put into it thanks for the awesome video
I think that sitting on that tooth of the bucket is how you get your man card. Mistakes are the right of passage on these kinds of industrial sites.
My second home for 6 years now driving those monsters! Loved it itโs the easiest job Iโve ever had! Really happy to be a part of it and to have driven one!

Thank you! As you know, there are hundreds of YouTube videos with people commenting on things they know nothing about. It was great to hear someone that really understands what they are talking about!! Thank you again for an interesting video!
The biggest mine in the world is the kennicott copper mine(Bingham canyon mine) in Utah,USA and I live by it. It also has the tallest tower at the kennicott smelter in the u.s. western hemisphere! You can still go to the mines overlook! 100% recommend it is beautiful. Those big huge mine trucks are amazing!
Bucyrus Erie! Now that is a classic Wisconsin company – too bad it went out of business in 2011!
Should of said old visitor center isn’t there anymore.
The engine is a 78 L Cummins engine with 12 turbos 3500 hp and 10,157 pounds of torque the engines are overhauled in Denver Colorado at the master rebuild center they usually do about 75 engines for the mine a year I work there now and they been a long customer of ours
So that giant hole didn’t used to be there?
As a copper miner , the drill diameter is most likely not larger then 12 inches. I think the bench height of this mine is 50 feet. The holes are filled with Anfo, or heavy anfo based on the hardness and water content of the area. In 2013 the main stay failure happened . They knew that the failure was going to happen but didn’t know the size. The next part he is looking at is a total station and prism system. Total station shoots a light beam at a reflective surfers and measures the change from the last scan. These are very helpful to show trends over a long time. Busieris was bought out by Cat. The tooth and adapter weight 54 lbs.
Fantastic! Thank you for making this – very inspiring for future engineers ๐
I work there, haul trucks haul about 370 tons every load, the tires apparently cost around $70,000 each.
Ammonia phosphate makes boom, drills are used for oil also.
