This is exactly the path the Celtics want to take this year. The organization knows that they are not going to be able to compete for the CHIP. Tatum and Brown are 23 and 24 and will have their time once LeBron, Harden, Durant and their contemporaries retire. The best path is to not overextend their payroll as Ainge exhibited at the trade deadline.

I don’t think Brad Stevens is the next Phil Jackson by any stretch, but the problem is more than just this underachieving. The core problem is Danny Ainge and his mindset on fleecing teams like he did with Billy King and the Nets. He screwed up in both in the off-season and the trade deadline. He could’ve had Myles Turner and Doug McDermott (+ 1st round pick) for Gordon Hayward, but no, Ainge wanted his "muh fleecing" and demanded either Malcolm Brogdon or Victor Oladipo, to which the Pacers said no and then the Hornets came giving Ainge only a trade exception. And what he did with this TPE – he used it (+ two 2nd round picks) for Evan Fournier, when he could’ve had either Nikola Vucevic or Aaron Gordon. Honestly if there’s a culture reset looming, the first person to get the axe should be Danny Ainge.

Brad Stevens should have been fired last year
Sometimes a coaches message gets stale, no matter how good the message is. Eventually he loses the locker room and they it’s time to go. I don’t know if that is the case with the Celtics, but that is what Stephen A is basically saying…this could be the beginning of the end for Brad Stevens.
