Trailer reel for “Legend of the Lost Indian Silver Mine”. This is about a movie I’ve wanted to make for over 40 years. When I was about 9 years old, my Mother told me a story that her Grandmother, a Native American, told her, about a hidden Indian cave, filled with treasure, somewhere in Southern Indiana. It seemed too amazing to be true. It wasn’t until I was an adult, and told the story to another folklorist, that he got excited and said my story was very similar to one he’d heard, and it was even detailed in a book. In 1815, Indians were trading crude silver ingots for Charlestown, Indiana miller John Work to mill their grain. He asked where all this silver was coming from but they would never tell him. When they were about to leave the area, having signed treaties with Indiana Territory Governor William Henry Harrison, they took John Work and showed him a cave, filled with piles and piles of silver. Although he spent the rest of his life trying to find the cave again, he was unsuccessful.
But the story doesn’t end there. Stories of Native American caves filled with treasure, and area settlers being shown a vast fortune, follows a distinct trail across southern Indiana. I have been able to locate the places these stories occurred and develop a theory around the silver mine and where the treasure is today. It’s simply been an amazing adventure, more leads are developing and i can’t wait to tell the amazing story about what I’ve found.
