The Elusive Crystal Hill Gold Mine – La Garita, Colorado – San Luis Valley Amethyst

The Crystal Hill District is located a few miles north and west of La Garita, Colorado (western side of San Luis Basin north of Alamosa) near Carnero Creek. The District was founded in 1881 by prospector and mining man Mark Biedell. The District produced native gold and silver from a collapse breccia structure for a few years before mining operations ceased, mostly by 1900. https://csmsgeologypost.blogspot.com/2011/11/colorado-amethyst.html

Cool, I have so much calcite, manganese layered calcite crystal my place it isn’t even funny. Rocks longer than your hands just layered all around. Dolomite calcite crystal. There is an old manganese mine just down the road from me. A lot of zinc and lead mining went on around me here in the county. Yeah that smoke looked sort of pretty here over us in Arkansas this morning after sunrise. Thanks.

That smoke from Alberta is scary 🙀 It’s going to go all around the world. Isn’t it early for wildfire season, I don’t know.

    Lead carbonate. Interesting.
How would you remove lead from zinc or zinc oxide? I brush my teeth with ZnO followed by boric acid and I wanna feel good about swallowing it without thinking about lead being such a companion of zinc. It’s not cheap ZnO but it doesnt say pharmaceutical quality.

I live in Montana and these old abandoned gold mines and the ghost towns associated with them are everywhere. We take a lot of off-road adventures to see them. Some are easily located, others are many miles over old mining roads to reach them. A capable 4WD vehicle is required, but the trip is worth it. These people who did the mining were amazingly capable.
