California’s Lithium Valley could power electric vehicle industry | 60 Minutes
As the U.S. auto industry goes green, companies are developing lithium extraction for batteries in California’s Imperial Valley. Bill Whitaker reports.

Where are you a ger the water from😅😅
good news. maybe this will lessen the US govs appatite of war over Taiwan since thats the primary incentive to mantain taiwans relatinship with US
These people are capitalist swine!
‘Lithium is currently being sent to Asia.” That is true, but the fact is is that it is being sent to China for making of batteries we rely upon. Why not say China as opposed to Asia?
We will see if they are willing to keep the cost down… But I dought it… I seriously dought it… Japan – sure they are doing it best, but here in greedy America… I dont see it ending well at all…
IT IS CURRENTLY NOT POSSIBLE TO RECYCLE LYTHIUM BATTERIES….
SO MORE TOXIC DISTRUCTION…..IN CALIFORNIA…. RIGHT ON TOP OF THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT….
GREAT IDEA …
WORLD CLASS VENTURE …
Now we just need gooberment to force people into EV’s because that’s the only way they buy this junk.
There Will be a huge disaster simply because it is not natural – none of this is… Never has been, Never will… Taking from the Earth – in whatever form, Never ends well…. Never… It all creates an imbalance, always does……..
God help us all…
California is too disfunction now to develop any new industry . Tesla will move out eventually.
Hemp could do mini better
Hhmmm so California and Newsom are pushing heavily for EV vehicles and California has a massive lithium deposit. Connect the dots and look between them and you’ll see why there’s a heavy push for EV vehicles.
Lets see how’s profitable it can be..by time the liberals get a hold of it, be lucky to break even
They better build the compound earthquake proof since sultan sea is active in earthquakes
Stop deflecting the truth about nickel and cobalt!!!!!!!!!
@2:44 he looks like a casino shark
Lithium is not a renewable resource but it’s worth a ton of money. I’d hardly call it a green energy. It’s no different than fossil fuel, it just new technology.
Lithium is about as unfriendly to the environment as Chernobyl. Giant bio hazard in the making
This segment is extremely favorable towards business interests and does not fully explain the dire status of the Salton Sea. While Lithium extraction has big benefits, 60 Minutes totally failed to highlight how bad the toxic dust and environmental impacts of mining will have on the surrounding area.
The Pacific Institute’s 2014 report states, "Even at the low estimate, the long–term social and economic costs of a deteriorating Salton Sea could approach $29 billion."
Failing to include the economic consequences of the Salton Sea’s demise does not provide the viewer with a full picture as to the stakes of lithium extraction.
He said transition. 🛑
It’s simply comical how you EV apologists stick your head in the sand with the coming environmental disaster caused by EV’s. Simply comical.
Lithium alternatives have been under way. Better cash in on the lithium craze before it’s too late.
It was reported in the mainstream news that – Elon Musk is now buying and using cost effective BYD batteries in his EV cars production since March 2023
Elon Musk has to eat his uncomplimentary words that talked down on BYD! 😂
Americans are so inventive and create such wonders.
Hey, gang, you left out one key question: Where does the electricity come from to charge all those batteries? Wind energy is turning turtle. Solar panels are largely another import. and can’t possibly pay for themselves. Nuclear is still political unthinkable. And most other sources of generation have the greenies lined up to stop R&D, let alone implementation. And, too, as tax rates rise, as they are sure to do, the voters’ willingness to subsidize lithium extraction and electric vehicles is somewhat likely to wane,
THEM BATTERIES LAST A LONG TIME…..WHY NOT MORE ATTENTION, GUESS THE CONTROLLING HAND, NOT LETTING OTHER RESOURCES COMPETE
We could have a fully functional society. We don’t. But we could 🍾🥂
All natural resources in America belong to We the people. Even California! So remember we all get a slice of that pie.
I guarantee you all… The minute these gets bad is when There is a huge accident and the environment is very nadly effected… Keep watching…
Recycling the batteries is also in need. Hopefully the government will take it into consideration
I wish people could get the lithium picture. It is very complicated, and the new sodium batteries are proving better and safer, and sodium is as easy to get hold of as lithium is difficult. Lithium seems to me a most unsafe investment.
But you have to charge them…
With every passing month theres less and less need for highly toxic lithium mining as sodium batteries are the next generation with better design and no fire hazard as associated with lithium batteries in crashes .
What about all the science saying that the imperial valley will be uninhabitable by 2050 because of all of the toxic dust. It already has the highest rate of youth asthma in the country…..
LITHIUM POLLUTION
NOT A SOLUTION
STOP ALL LITHIUM MINING NOW!!!
LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE VERY VERY DANGEROUS
LITHIUM BATTERY CARS ARE LIKE BOMBS AND THE PARKING GARAGES ARE NOT ENGINEERED TO SAFELY SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF PARKED ELECTRIC VEHICLES
As long greedy individuals dont ruin the business aspect, and its a win win for everyone
LITHIUM IS ON IT’S WAY OUT – There is already new battery materials companies are starting to switch over too.
So why are we buying our lithium from Australia or Chile?
Could lithium be combined with titanium and Nickel.
Maybe TiN coat the battery everywhere you can
Two things here. The "environmental" guy said nothing about the environment. You’re high AF if you think domestic lithium is going to make EV’s cheaper.
Looking forward to the environmental catastrophe when these pools are open to the air and a earthquake, fire or the pool fails. Causing all that waste to destroy thousands of acres for decades to come
LAC’s Thacker Pass in Nevada will be up and running years before the dream that is production from the Salton Sea. If you’re looking to put your money into lithium, LAC is it.
5566 t⁴55⁵I I am
What a way to corner the market. The cleanest energy is free energy.
Where does the lithium come from????? slaves process and mine it.
What another joke there is not enough lithium to sustain the current EVs let alone millions in the future, within 5 years we will be using another better battery tech. Look around the only good EVs will be with future battery tech, so wait to buy about 5 years…
Digging in California perpetually for resources is a bad idea. You already have earthquakes and the San Andreas fault. And the green electricity grid cant sustain all needs for energy.
This is great and would be wonderful to attract more people to this underpopulated part of California. I have a question for any scientist or engineer reading these comments. Is a Solar powered or Solar assisted panel feasible on a car? I am thinking about replacing sun roofs with solar cells on the roof. Would that provide enough power to recharge the battery as you were driving? The problem I see with Electric vehicles is the lack of and time used to plug in your car on say a cross country trip. If you could provide solar power to your battery, it might not replace charging stations but couldn’t it help get more mph between charges?
