Borax Mine- the real pit mine in Boron California
California’s largest open-pit mine and the largest borax mine in the world. Ore reserves are sufficient for production through at least 2050. It is operated by the Borax division of the Rio Tinto Group.
Mining at the site by shafts began in the 1920s. Pacific Coast Borax later became U.S. Borax, which subsequently opened the current open-pit mine in 1957. U.S. Borax was later acquired by Rio Tinto Group, which continues to operate the mine.
They also started producing Lithium in 2019 when it was discovered that Lithium was in the Borax waste product. Lithium is used mainly to produce cell phone batteries.
The 2nd generation 20 Mule Team Wagon is at the visitor’s center with model Mules to show how the process began.
The mine’s Borax Visitor Center, which includes a museum, historic mining artifacts, and a mine overlook, is open to the public.

Hi, Christina and Randy 👋 !! Thanks for this well put together video, such an interesting place to visit on this breezy day 😃👍. Cheers, Don 🙋♂️ !!
Very windy there!
I remember My 1st grade teacher putting borax in my mouth while the class was watching because I cursed "S—T"
And of course I Immediately spit it out spraying borax around making a big mess for the teacher to clean-up
Thats so interesting! I can’t believe how many tons those trucks hold! Good video!
This is cool. I would never get to see this mine without you guys exploring it and showing it on youtube! I appreciate all your vlogging work.
I’ve always wanted to stop there. Gas prices are crippling my ability to travel now. Maybe one day. Thank you for this video. Well done!
I tried to go here last year. They weren’t open and even wouldn’t let me drive in for a picture. 🤪 I’ll have to give it a try next time I’m out this way.
A very cool visit. Interesting seeing how they mined it. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️
Wonderful stuff. A whole lot more than great soap after working on my Truck.
That sample of borate ore was really cool. This was an amazing tour.
Cool place
Great content, so important so interesting. Keep up the good work. Side note – please try to keep camera much steadier. Hard to watch at times, tho I really wanted to see everything about the mine. They have stabilization devices on the market. But other cheaper ways are available too, like a tripod. I’m sure I couldn’t do any better myself. Really enjoyed your visit.
I’m tire of hearing Pearl laugh at your video. 😂. That was a big Tonka truck. Neat follow up video
