so privat investors want to build some apartments- ans the rest of the people can pay for a new station- so it fits to the new buildings. in the usa you only have public investments if there is some private investment hiding behind it. ugh bye , it became a 3 world country sorry

I remember the current Penn station being best described by this comparison to the original; "With the original Penn Station, people strode into NYC like kings. Now they scurry in like rats."

  6. SonOfNunz on April 13, 2023 at 4:19 pm

Penn station is New York’s version of skid row in LA

If penn station is rebuilt according to rethinkpennstation’s plans, then It’d take the title from Grand Central as the most beautiful station in NYC

Improving access to NYC from NJ via the dilapidated tunnel is paramount to any updates that are merely for aesthetics. I spent 5 years commuting to and from NYC for work, with delays and cancellations being more common than smooth transit. Commuters deserve better! I would still work there if it weren’t for the hellish commute (16 miles between my town and the city feeling more like 50 each day).

So in other words this won’t happen. πŸ™„

"The railways fell out of fashion" more like "the government and automakers conspired to kill streetcars and trains"

  12. darkwoodmovies on April 13, 2023 at 4:25 pm

My issue with this plan is the same as Hudson Yards. It’s going to be a flashy, glass-and-concrete ultra-modern development that costs a fortune, and the developers will have to make their money back. That means it will be reserved as office space for only the most elite corporations and any retail will either be luxury or massive chains that can afford it. There won’t be any Chinese take-outs, pubs, pizza shops, or local spots that give New York its character. It will be sterile, boring, and dead at night.

  13. Mary McCluer on April 13, 2023 at 4:26 pm

Great investment project and well worth the construction hassle. It will bring in more commuters and visitors and will be great for local businesses.

The demolition of the original Penn Station was much bigger and significant than presented here.

"It should be converted to through running like London Paris…."
    Euston: Terminal
    Waterloo: Terminal
    St Pancras International: Terminal
    Kings Cross: Terminal
    Victoria: Terminal
    Gare d’Lyon: Terminal
    Gare du Norde: Terminal

Like I agree Pen Station should be through running, but that statement is really confusing.

I love Amtrack and I feel like I’m the last of a dying breed routing for cross country train travel, but they need to be renovated as well.

Ironically, the Garden, in its current state, has actually been around longer than the original Penn Station was. It too is a historic site, and it too has significance. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Even if you try to rebuild Penn as it was before…it’s *not* the same. Imagine if the Chrysler Building or Radio City were destroyed, and someone tried to rebuild those, it wouldn’t be the same. There’s idealism, and then there’s reality. A lot of people and businesses would be displaced by the Rethink plan. And whatever would replace it would probably be more condos in the tens of millions each. That’s been the MO the last few decades…how would this not be different? THINK about it, logically. Think how much more wisely that $7B could be used in other ways…helping small business, bringing truly affordable housing (which used to exist in NYC), giving businesses breaks for paying their workers a higher wage. THOSE are wins that everyone can benefit from, not a Pollyanna replica of a building that was demolished 60 years ago and, quite frankly, can’t truly be replicated at any cost.

Move Madison Square Garden to Govenor’s island and create a subway from Manhattan to Staten Island running through it.

I went to Europe last August and was completely inspired by the architecture I saw, particularly in Brussels, Paris and London. While I think neofuturist architecture has its place in some parts of the world, even in New York (being a huge fan of the WTC redevelopment), I’m desperate for a revival of classical and Beaux-Arts architecture. Nothing would make me happier than seeing a new Penn Station that pays tribute to its former glory from 100 years ago. Moynihan is a bit of a step in that direction but I want to see the stone, the glass ceiling vaulted by iron columns, the lampposts, the statutes, etc.

  33. darkwoodmovies on April 13, 2023 at 4:48 pm

The greedy thieves that tore down the original Penn Station should have served life in prison for what they did to NYC.

  41. Dan on April 13, 2023 at 4:57 pm

I cannot believe they got rid of that beautiful original building. That is an actual crime.

  42. Bill Wood Illustration on April 13, 2023 at 4:57 pm
