FIRST DRIVE: Renault R5 Turbo 3E – 375hp Electric Hot Hatch | Top Gear

It’s called the R5 Turbo 3E, and it’s a two-seat tribute to the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 of yesteryears. And unlike most concept cars that’ll turn heads and nothing else, this might just turn your stomach too because it’s designed for DRIFTING.

Don’t be fooled by the all-electric powertrain: it’s rear-wheel drive courtesy of a motor on each of the back wheels, delivering a playful 375hp and 516lb ft. Renault reckons on 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 124mph, but stops short of predicting what range you’ll get from the 42kWh battery. Presumably, because you can’t get a WLTP rating when sideways…

At 1.5 tonnes (520kg of that is battery cells) it’s a good deal heavier than the cars that inspired it, but a tubular chassis, protected flat base and FIA-approved roll cage should provide plenty of stiffness when engaging that impossible-to-miss handbrake. Which Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage wasn’t allowed to touch. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t drift it.

You completely lost me at the 1500kg… mine is 834kg with carbon hood, trunk, doors… THAT’S almost half!

  4. Sniper Monke on April 8, 2023 at 1:46 pm

  5. Night Bond on April 8, 2023 at 1:48 pm

    C’est RENAULT, C’EST FRANCAIS….

  6. L0000NEY on April 8, 2023 at 1:48 pm

I want something like this for the road, but nobody will ever make it. I’m so sick of manufacturers teasing with cool small cars then never actually giving them to us 🙁

  7. Owen Chua on April 8, 2023 at 1:48 pm

I wish Ken Block can live to see this. This is Hoonigan Material

  8. Žiga Černigoj on April 8, 2023 at 1:49 pm

Really, no more rally cars from Renault?

What is this then, a toothbrush? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xti-87O-Sek
    Reported for fake news.

  9. Ancient Oak on April 8, 2023 at 1:49 pm

Great project, now throw away that joke of a Gig Nikko engine and put in a real ICE engine, i.e. a Renault 1.8 turbo, thanks.

  10. Chromium on April 8, 2023 at 1:51 pm

A chance to have a modern version of the old turbo 2!? Sign me up. If even a few of these design cues end up on the road car….chefs kiss.

  11. Teosystems on April 8, 2023 at 1:53 pm

    Renault bring the 5 back!

  12. KD on April 8, 2023 at 1:54 pm

This way a nice looking car…. I will buy one on the spot…. ❤

  15. Broke Euro Garage on April 8, 2023 at 1:57 pm

I’m sorry, but how can it be called a turbo when it’s bloody electric? It’s as stupid as the Porsche taycan “turbo”

  16. CharlieboySLONDON on April 8, 2023 at 1:57 pm

I absolutely love the look of this. They need to drop the rear wing , make it road legal and put a real engine init. This would sell like hot cakes !

  17. Idok Watcher on April 8, 2023 at 1:58 pm

5:41 yeah exactly, the proportions that the road cars will not have. They will be some 2 ton CUV monstrosity. This is marketing for the dumbest of the dumb.

  18. olivetree on April 8, 2023 at 1:59 pm

    1500 kilos? get out

  19. Paul Tinwell on April 8, 2023 at 1:59 pm

Finger on the pulse? Jeez… what’s the point? I think the design team’s average age must have been about 12. I can see what they’ve tried to do, but no. Pointless. Try harder Renault.

  20. Dinotti on April 8, 2023 at 2:03 pm

It looks amazing, but road version will probably not.

  21. C Mc on April 8, 2023 at 2:04 pm

First lekkie car I actually want…..

  22. Oliver Rashid on April 8, 2023 at 2:05 pm

First Hyundai and now Renault making the best looking and most exciting concept cars in 2023. Who would have called that?

  23. plasticfire on April 8, 2023 at 2:08 pm

Sounds like a Unigate milk float (look it up kids), I know it’s the ‘future’ but please get some sound sorted!

  24. Tony Barton on April 8, 2023 at 2:09 pm

My uncle had one of the original turbo 5 s , going down the main road at 30 in town , he just touched the hand brake , viola we where facing the wrong way , hilarious for a 12 year old 😂😂

  25. Pat Bai on April 8, 2023 at 2:09 pm

Why would it have a steel chassis?

  26. Brendan Drives on April 8, 2023 at 2:12 pm

    I don’t want any EV.

    But I want this thing

  27. Philip Minns on April 8, 2023 at 2:13 pm

Interesting car, not much of a video, unfortunately.

  28. Joe Girard on April 8, 2023 at 2:14 pm

The wrap and interior are hideous, however the car is beautiful in design.

  29. Steven Wheeler on April 8, 2023 at 2:17 pm

That’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen in ages. R5 is a top 3 car for me anyway, but this is mad.

  30. bingoberra18 on April 8, 2023 at 2:18 pm

I´m sorry to say, as a true lover of the old 5 turbos, this is a mockery and publicity stunt that deserved to be so much better.

  31. MagnusDriver on April 8, 2023 at 2:18 pm

If they decide to produce a street legal version of this… I’ll sell a kidney if it’s necessary to get one.

  32. Having fun with Vazquez on April 8, 2023 at 2:19 pm

That would be the perfect car for production, it would really change the car industry in how raw a modern electric car can be. I know I would buy that, in a heartbeat.

  33. Lilian on April 8, 2023 at 2:19 pm

This is so cyberpunk or what “Back to the Future” imagined cars would look like

  34. Jeevan Chaukar on April 8, 2023 at 2:23 pm

Lovely! If at all enthusiasts have to be convinced about Electric vehicles, then such cars may ultimately do that job!

  35. Adam White on April 8, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Praying these come into production , hopefully hear more soon 🫡

  36. A J on April 8, 2023 at 2:25 pm

    I would buy one

  37. Brad Parker on April 8, 2023 at 2:27 pm

But why call it a turbo…?

  38. Will Ekselman on April 8, 2023 at 2:28 pm

Build it Renault, just build it

  39. NNN on April 8, 2023 at 2:29 pm

    I want one 😁

  40. Gian F on April 8, 2023 at 2:29 pm

    Nice, too bad it’s electric

  41. 252Scooby on April 8, 2023 at 2:29 pm

Almost like a tribute to Mr Block 🚗

  42. tomyeplcharger on April 8, 2023 at 2:30 pm

Un sans faute 👍…on peut toujours rêver d’une version de production 🙏

  43. Basti Eschenbach on April 8, 2023 at 2:31 pm

Why no rally? Renault does a AWD Clio Rally3, among others.

  44. 1620 Potato on April 8, 2023 at 2:32 pm

    🥴 It’s sounds beautiful 🥴 🙄😂

  45. Marcus Jackson on April 8, 2023 at 2:33 pm

    Looks like someone played cyberpunk

  46. Modern Classic Collectables on April 8, 2023 at 2:33 pm

Can’t stand the rear wing, and 1500kg! The original R5 GT Turbos when I was a kid was everywhere- and they weighed no more than a tin of beans.
    Fact.

  47. Lloyd. on April 8, 2023 at 2:36 pm

Looks cool, needs a v6 in the back!

  48. Definitely Not HorizonTea on April 8, 2023 at 2:37 pm

The design just screams Hoonigan to me

  49. Pete White on April 8, 2023 at 2:37 pm

Looks Great But Whats the Point of wasting Money When They Should Just Get On With Making Cars Real People Can Buy at A Decent Price ?.
I Dont Want a £50k SUV Electric Tank ,I Want A Renault 5 EV Rear wheel Drive For £15k That will Do 200 miles on a charge !
Now Here is the Real Challenge ,Go and Get on Making That Happen.

  50. benanderson89 on April 8, 2023 at 2:38 pm

"they went down the jumble sale and bought a bear!"

How fortuitous that they found a bear with the Renault logo on its left foot!
