TREASURE: Upshur County Treasures

TREASURE: Upshur County Treasures

PLEASE SHARE:

PART 1: The Buckhannon River Treasure. In 1863 Lewis County farmer Walter Wilson learned of a legendary “treasure cave” supposedly located somewhere in neighboring Upshur County along the Buckhannon River. He was entrusted with a vaguely written map indicating the cave’s general location. Wilson died shortly after obtaining the map’s “key” and before he could launch a search for the hidden treasure.

Years later his grandson, Joseph Wilson, picked up the search but was unable to locate the map’s key. 20+ years of searching proved futile. in 1894 Wilson turned the map over to local author and historian Virgil McWhorter who later immortalized the tale in his 1915 book The Border Settlers of Southwestern Virginia.

The treasure cave, if it exists, has never been found.

PART 2: The Upshur County Doll House Treasure. In 1889 a man, calling himself Alfonso Marzo, came to southern Upshur County. He supposedly purchased a small tract of land along the Alexander & Rich Mountain Railroad from a local farmer names James Shahan. On this land he built a strange home, describe by those who saw it as a miniaturized version of a contemporary frame home. In essence, a human “Doll House.”

Marzo remains in the valley for about 4 years but kept mostly to himself, showing his face only when absolutely necessary. Around 1893 Marzo disappeared, leaving behind only his oddly sized home and questions. In 1911 James Shahan received a cryptic letter, supposedly addressed to him by Marzo. Marzo related a strange tail of $330,000.00 buried on or near the location of the “Doll House.” By 1911 this house had also disappeared and Marzo was never heard from again. So far as we know the treasure he referenced has never been found.

    Gaol is pronounced jail.
In Canada we see that weird spelling sometimes.

So weird, yet interesting to, for the 1st time, become aware of events that happened a century before I was born, just a wee bit south of where I grew up. WV has so much hidden history – ghosts in the rock – revealed ithru folklore, but also in records, artifacts, & familial testimony. So many secrets! I love the old former homesteads almost entirely reclaimed by nature. Strange, remnants of his home should vanish so quickly from the land w/o a trace. There’s usually at least pieces of foundation or chimney stones scattered beneath dirt, brush, & overgrowth; bottle dumps & half-buried trash heaps, as well.

Maybe this was like an early version of a Nigerian scam. Send me money and I’ll send you the big money. I say that partly in jest. I like the appreciation that marzo had for the man.

  18. Heyoka Empath on November 25, 2022 at 11:57 pm

  41. Ann on November 26, 2022 at 12:28 am

I always consider that the "treasures" that were said to be buried might have been found. If someone found it, especially at the time when the coins were recognized, who would tell? I would think someone would not want others to know.

  42. Sabrina Tschäß on November 26, 2022 at 12:28 am

To be perfectly honest… I can’t imagine somebody discovering a significant cash of silver and gold and then just up and telling everyone about it… I think my first instinct would be to keep it on the down low. Lol.
