Deep underground lie stores of once-inaccessible natural gas. There’s a technology, called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” that can extract this natural gas, potentially powering us for decades to come. So how does fracking work and why is it a source of such heated controversy? Mia Nacamulli explains the ins and outs of fracking.

Frack the Planet !
it works thru and with poisoning the whole enviroment – everything else is a lie.
Biased propaganda aiming to demonise the most reliable and most abundant sources of energy (hydrocarbons) in favour of fairytale unreliable so-called renewables.
and who exactly is ‘us’??? @0:32
Imagine the endless amounts of constant money the Koch bros are getting for this invention.
hey ruth paull
1:29 So in 3 or 4 months Germany can be independent of russian gas.
Congratulations Greta and green activists you do Putin’s dream job!
These"issues" are not real.
The reason we fracture wells is that the shale that contains the natural gas has very small pores in it, in contrast with a more open sandstone. In a conventional formation, the natural gas can flow for several hundred feet to get to the well. In a tight formation, it flows much more slowly. Adding the fractures allows much more gas to flow to the well for much longer, making the well viable. Hydraulic fracturing has been used for about 60 years in other types of wells, but only recently has been applied to natural gas wells. This technique has doubled our recoverable natural gas supply and reduced our greenhouse gas production to below the targets set at the Paris Agreement (I bet you don’t hear that from many climate activists).
Opening Pandoras box ,and there is no stoping it after starting ????
FAKE NEWS
Why do they pump arsenic into the ground (water)… And then dump it in the rivers?
Hi rupaul
Fracking is awesome and cool
So many mistakes in this.
It usually involves being stationed on a Battlestar, during a time when something bad is happening. Usually cylon related.
Safe .. homegrown, job creating , energy.
Ok, let’s say the earth is an egg and the earths crust is the egg shell. If one makes tiny cracks in the shell of the egg, eventually the cracks will compromise the integrity of the shell and the egg shell will no longer be able to contain the egg.
Now, some will say that isn’t a good comparison due to the fact that the egg, under its shell, is fluid in its consistency and the earth under its crust is predominantly rock. So let’s repeat the scenario with a hard boiled egg. The shell is cracked to the point that it is unstable, but still retains the contents. However, the contents, now having been exposed are now vulnerable to oxidation, which will speed decomposition, resulting in the entire contents rotting…
just a thought…
Reminds me of my colonoscopy.
I thought it was a crazy thing made up by the writers in Bojack Horsman
The feds need to open up the wells again and stop fracking. Fracking causes a mammoth amount of damage to surrounding soil and ruins ground water. There is also evidence fracking causes such underground disruption it causes earthquakes. Fracking is the WRONG way to get oil but the governments and our demand for oil are to blame.
Spreading cancer and ruinig the earth. way to go !
Well showing this video in Germany, where this topic is a big controversy, would result in a riot. Thanks anyway, the video was well balanced.
Biden like … that’s great ! Now shut it down ! Lol
The earthquakes produced by fracking are only 3rd magnitude, therefore they will barely be felt. The UK has already had 5th magnitude earthquakes, and in medieval times a single 6th magnitude earthquake – those are the ones that might cause damage. The little 3rd magnitude earthquakes do not cause damage.
To many mistakes
Putin thanks this vídeo.
:20 The earth is only around 6,000 years old; those oil pockets came from the flood (animals and such getting mixed together).
Works fine til a liberal potato head gets "elected"
Thats messed up man.
Rupaul: 👀 📝 💡 ❗️
this man can narrate the most terrifying thing in the world and still make it sound calming
Wonder why all the droughts are coincidentally where the highest concentration of fracking stations. I mean thousands of stations.
Oh the fracking ?
Thank you for this informative video.
More BS?
Renewable energy as it stands is a joke is not competitive whatsoever. Maybe in a hundred years from now.
Calling all feminists..fracking companies now hiring! Lol!
So, a video that was supposed to teach me "how does fracking work", which I interpret to mean: how the fracking process physically works, gives me maybe a 2 minute explanation about the process, which boils down to little more than: they dig a really deep hole straight down, make a single turn, inject a gun like drillhead into the hole to create cracks, then power a special mixed water solution into the hole, to expand the cracks, and allow the gas to seep up to the surface.
After this very bare bones explanation ends, they then spend the next two-thirds of the video explaining why fracking is environmentally dangerous.
Umm…well, that kind of pisses me off.
I’m more than happy to learn about the environmental dangers fracking poses, but before that…I want to learn HOW fracking is actually done, by that I mean: I’d like a brief introduction to the history of fracking, why and how the process was invented, why and how it differs from any traditional oil/gas drilling methods, how and why sites for fracking are actually chosen–if there is actually a criteria that is–and of course, HOW THE GAS IS ACTUALLY EXTRACTED!
Like why do these cracks allow the gas to escape? Is the shale rock naturally porous? How is it actually keeping the gas contained? Is the shale for fracking special, or are all shale deposits rich with gas? And how did people discover this? And who or who all figured out the process, and is it a very difficult process, compared to traditional drilling? (Because the video makes it sound incredibly simple.)
By all means include the environmental dangers, too. I want to learn as much as I can, but be honest about the content of the video. If you want to spend most of the time talking about the environmental dangers, then title the video accordingly, please.
Very explained info
thanks a million👍
If we ban fracking or slow it down, we can expect $5-$7 a gallon for gasoline……..oh wait…….FJB!!!
Excellent explanation, thank you very much.
Fantastic video, straight to the point and very informative
Fracking, like climate change, where information is classified as misinformation and vice versa by the media and politicians
When was this video made?
Renewable energy is not renewable, it’s also a joke in any conversation talking about powering modern industrialized societies. See how well it worked out for Germany lol.
you need to make another version of this video just for the UK,
where you point out that only areas with Labour votes get effected by fracking….
so the corrupt Tories get fooled into fracking their own houses or castles to rubble.
you know fracking putting chemicals into the under ground water table will eventually contaminate all underground water , they’re all connected the north west where most fracking occurs is at a higher elevation water will flow down into the rest of the states water tables at lower elevations contaminating them as well
