Rockhounding in Arizona! In Search of Chrysocolla, Azurite, Turquoise
Join us as we go spelunking and rockhounding thru old copper mines of Arizona. We dig thru tailings full of minerals and gems!
We are taking a trip into Mine Canyon, an old copper mining district in Southeast Arizona. The terrain is so rough, we have to take the RZR to get to the mines.
In one tailing dump, we rockhound and discover Azurite, Turquoise, Chrysocolla, and even Malachite.
We then venture into the old abandoned mine shaft where we find copper veins and quartz crystals.
It’s a fun trip and is pretty exciting, especially if you are a rockhound, like us!

Here is the riddle to find this area:
Head 51 miles Southeast from The Basalt Covered Hill as the crow flies.
Here you will land in the place to Sharpen Knives.
From there you will head due West to the Ranch Of Sands.
Once there, you will cross thru the forest service gate and wave at Smokey The Bear.
From there on, follow the rough trail (Off Road Vehicle required) and you will be greeted by the Canyon which belonged to the Miners!

Are you sure the light teal rock your seeing isn’t just "copper staining," or the corosion of traces of copper that the host rock contains?

Fantastic. I am from Seattle and am currently in Jerome, AZ hunting the tailings and it such a blast to explore. Thanks for sharing your experience! Any hints to the road into that wilderness? I just may head that way next.

I don’t understand why you don’t wear some kind of dust masks when going into old mines. In 2000 there was an outbreak of the deadly Marburg/ Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Men working in mines were exposed via the bats in the mines. Besides this, airborne toxins like asbestos and heavy metal particulates as well as gasses that have no ordor can be in caves and mines. You do know why canaries were taken into mines, right?
That was fun to watch. I have always liked rockhounding.

try muriatic acid on those quartz points..it cleans the iron off and wont harm the quartz

Looks like the material at my claim. I thought it was turquoise for a couple weeks too. I did find veins and nodules if you want to see what it looks like in situ.
